Where the Wildlings are

Even vampires want a good tan

Chapter 1 by cdbaby cdbaby

The change first began when witches made themselves known. Humans had called themselves or others witches for centuries only to be proven false. Until the day true witches had had enough and in a display of what could only be described as magical they appeared in times square in a dazzling shower of light. Three witches stood in the middle of a busy intersection, cloak hoods up at first, slowly they drew them back revealing their faces, as one by one they began chanting. Chanting; the two women and one man cast a spell that terrified pedestrians at first, the first spell cast before mortals in modern day was turning a lamp post into a tree. No one believed at first of course. The new tree in the concrete jungle was thoroughly examined. The bark was real, the leaves were green in spring and summer and orange and yellow in fall before falling in winter. The wires that had once given power to the light had now become an intricate root system that stretched beyond its branches. Beyond the roots, the wires and cables still existed, they simply…stopped a foot from the newly formed fully grown oak.

Humans would find similar acts repeated across the globe, all during times and in places with the most eyes on them. At first humans were afraid; Was this a declaration of war? An invasion? Was it too late or even possible to stop something that could alter the fabric of matter?

These questions and more were addressed by Maxus Rallius, elected English spokesman for the council of witches. At a public press conference he informed the world that witches and wizards were real, as were a lot more beings thought only to be fairy tales and fiction. The conference went on for hours, on every station across the world, exhaustive questioning by reporters and civilians alike. So it was that humanity learned magic was real, and its wielders were no different than any human with any weapon or tool. They simply wished to live as humans did. It took time but over the years humanity came to accept witches and wizards into their society.

Then the monsters came. Or that is what they were called at first. Werewolves, shifters, nephylym, nymphs, orcs, elves, they all came out of the woodwork. In the case of tree nymphs, literally. For many years the council acted as mediator between the wildlings, as society at large called them, and the humans. It took time and more than a few skirmishes had broken out between the wildlings and the humans, but they managed to reach an accord with most human societies for now. For a while this meant the less humanistic wildlings lived near but separate from humans even in the countries that accepted them either for fear of persecution or hatred of humans.

The societies which were once hidden from humanity now existed alongside them. But it has left many humans wondering, what creatures still lurk in the shadows? Are they friend or foe? Will this affect the cost of gas?
