Victoria’s Asteroid Mining Adevnture

A grease monkey’s journey

Chapter 1 by Immatakeyourdong Immatakeyourdong

Victoria felt a tired confidence flow through her weary body. She gently leaned forward onto the console, feeling the nose of the ship dip down as she did so. The screen in front of her was split between the rocky pick marked ground below and the ink sky studded with more lights than anyone could ever visit in a lifetime. She dipped the nose back up, a thin sheets of sweat causing the salty drops to leave a snails trail through the dirt on her skin.

Victoria silently smiled, and let the ship stay in place. Wiping the sweat of her brow, and seeing the grime covered arm, she made sure to double check the sensors. According to her ship, she was sitting on a wealth of undisturbed ore. Enough ore that if she could collect it all, she would be able to live the rest of her life in peace.

If she could collect it all of course. Victoria licked her lips, not yet able to believe in her luck. Most asteroids like this had nothing of worth in their cores, and the ones that did were always found by big companies with ships that could sense ore a lightyear away. But here was a veritable gold mine of ore. And she would have to work fast in case someone else entered the system she was in. She arched her back and stretched her arms high above her head.

She ran her hands through her oily hair. Hot water was hard to come by during travel, at least in her little ship. Now that she landed, she could set up the matter collecting device and take as many showers as she wanted. Victoria took a deep breath and focused on the console in front of her.

Hovering about a 100 feet over the surface of the asteroid, she let the ships computer calculate the speed it was rotating below her, and soon matched it. The ground was slightly uneven, but she had landed in much worse conditions before.

With a gentle teasing of the throttle down, the ship slowly descended until it kissed the ground lightly. Flipping a few switches to make sturdy but light attachments to the ground, the ship shuddered slightly as the rods of metal drilled into the stone below her. She smiled and stood up.

Victoria took a few tentative steps forward, her body still not entirely used to the little bit of gravity. She made a note to turn on the ships gravity generator later so she could be at least in somewhat good shape when she went to sell the ore.

Her bare feet slapped against the metal walkways of the ship, her graceless gait all but ignored by her. She came to an intersection of the ship, and she knew she had three things to do, but wasn’t sure which would be the best to do first.
