There wasn't much else you could do, you had come to find out. Once she had set her sights on a victim there was no escape. The more they fled, hid or slipped out of her grasp the more exciting it became for her. Maybe you would survive a month or a year, maybe a few if you were truly elusive, but she was powerful, immortal and quite singularly focused on the hunt which defined her existence.

You had learned a lot about Kavita since she was introduced to you several weeks ago. She was so alluring, so charming, and so...fixated on you. You couldn't imagine why at the time. You're attractive enough, to be sure, and as a quiet history scholar, you are just a little more charming than women usually expect. That is to say, you get plenty of dates when you're looking, but never this kind of attention.

She was so stunningly beautiful you couldn't muster your usual confidence, yet she hung on your every word. You tried to impress her with a few practiced anecdotes from obscure corners of history framed in novel or humorous narratives, but she'd heard it all before. She knew more about everything you brought up than you did, even the topic of your thesis. Though none of your usual ways of endearing yourself to women seemed to go the way you hoped, it didn't put her off one bit. She seemed fascinated by you.

You left the party that night feeling off kilter, a bit unable to collect your thoughts. Excited, but feeling unimpressive. As you were headed home, Stacie, a colleague from the museum called you. You and her hooked up occasionally, but it had been some time, you thought she had a boyfriend now. You saw her at the party, but hadn't been able to pull away to say hi. You would have expected a text if had been a social call, so assuming it must be something urgent at work, you picked up.

"Hello Stacie, what's up?" you answered.

"Hi John. I saw who you were talking to tonight." Stacie replied, sounding worried.

"Oh...Kavita. What, is there something I should know?"

"Yes. I'm sorry about this John, but you have to run. Get what you need from home and get out of there. I saw you left the party alone, I doubt you'll get a second chance." she continued.

Stacie was not one for pranks or jokes, and she was relentless in her disdain for conspiracies or kooks. Whatever it was, if it concerned Stacie, it was serious.

"But...what? Stacie, what is going on? What do you mean?"

"I'm serious John. If you stop by my place on your way out of town, I'll give you a book and someone to reach out to in Germany, but you have to go. She's a succubus, like a real world fucking succubus, and...I think I maybe put her onto you. I'm so sorry John...I didn't know....I thought it was all a stupid joke and..." there was a heavy pause, "...and I don't know. Just please come get the book and get out of here right away. I'm sorry..."

"It's okay Stacie, I'll be by soon."

What else could you say? You weren't sure what you believed yet, but maybe you'd find out more when you saw Stacie.

To Stacie's
