Time Cycle

Saving your present in the past

Chapter 1 by protoborg protoborg

"Sir, the enemy has breached the outer Solar System. Uranus is offline and Neptune is not even showing up on sensors. Saturn and Jupiter are evacuating as we speak. The outer defenses are gone sir."

"Initiate the sequence. We have no time to dilly-dally here, people!"

Machines came to life as the reactors came online one after another. The hum of high power lines transmitting the energy to hidden machinery could be heard throughout the compound. This was only overshadowed by the sound of running feet and shouted orders. Everyone knew it must be nearing the end if the reactors were online and the machinery was powering up. The humans were making their final stand. The machinery, now at full power, began to hum even louder as the power was funneled into a single point of glowing roiling energy. The field grew slowly as a glow began to permeate the entire room. From the control room, orders were still being thrown around even now. Every single command had a purpose. Every action was meant for one thing...

You stand looking out of the glass tube as people rush around you getting things ready for the final stage.

"Sir, the outer Martian defense grid has gone offline and fighting has broken out on the surface. We have deployed all of our defenses at the moon. Nothing is slowing them. What do we do?!"

"Get that damn thing going! We're running out of time to complete this project!"

"yes, sir! Right away, Sir!"

That is the last thing you hear as the toilet-water-blue energy swirls around your body. A moment later you are ****. The last thing to happen before your mind completely disconnects with reality is the shuddering and shaking of the tube as an missile detonates just outside the base.

Regaining consciousness a few moments later, you look around you and find you do not recognize your location. You seem to be in some sort of forest, but for the life of you, you have no idea where it might be as you haven't seen a forest for some 30 years. You decide to take stock of what you do know.

  1. You are in some sort of forest with no idea of where you are or even how to find a human being.
  2. You have no idea how to get back to your base, if it still exists.
  3. Looking down at your body, you find you are naked.
  4. Your body seems to have been enhanced by some sort of technology.
  5. You have a mission to find the person who created that technology and convince him to invented it a bit... sooner... than he might have otherwise.

Looking around you, you see four possible ways to go; north, south, east, and... down. You seem to have "landed" next to a cliff to the west that drops off sharply. You feel lucky you didn't land any further west as you would have likely not survived the fall from this height. It is a good tenth of a mile to the bottom of the cliff. You decide to pick a direction and just start walking. You figure if you walk in a straight line far enough, you will eventually find some kind of human presence. After all, from what you can tell the tube did its job for the most part; it put you on Earth somewhere in the early 21st century. The exact location in space and time is still a mystery to you, though.

So which way do you walk?
