Through The Wormhole

You stand in front of the doorway, shivering in the cold that emanates from it. The clothes you're wearing aren't suited for the cold, but you know that soon you'll be somewhere else completely. As you hug yourself for warmth, a Gatekeeper approaches, her soberly-coloured robes offset by a fluorescent yellow hard hat.

"Your papers are all in order, Mr. Greenwood", she says, her voice rough from years of exposure to cosmic rays.

She hands you a tablet, then a folded piece of paper. You give it, then her, a puzzled look.

"This came for you a few minutes ago", she explains. "When you're ready to go through, type in the code of your destination, and step through the door."

She hurriedly walks back behind the concrete wall that protects the Gatekeepers.

You unfold the note. There is a short message written on it – 'Urgent. Destination changed'. This is followed by a 10 digit alphanumeric code. You frown. Your trip today was to a nearby planet in the solar system. For such a short trip, you would have only been exposed to minimal levels of cosmic radiation, and you had taken precautions for that. However, without knowing how far away this destination will be, you haven't had time to prepare. You sigh, and slide a small canister out of your pocket, and spray yourself with it. The spray should protect you, but it's expensive, and you didn't want to waste any on this trip. You sigh again, and type in the code into the tablet, then place it on the table beside the doorway. Golden lights set in the lintel above the door begin to glow, and the darkness inside grows deeper. You take a deep breath, and step inside.

For a few minutes, you feel as if your body is simultaneously being compressed into a tiny ball, and pulled apart. Finally, when the sensations fall away, you see another doorway in the distance. It approaches faster than you can imagine, and after a blink of an eye, you are standing directly in front of it. You step over the threshold, ready to face whatever you will find on the other side.
