The water shut off with a squeak of old pipes, and suddenly the locker room was way too quiet.

Chloe stood under the showerhead for a second longer, letting the last drops run down her back. Her muscles ached---two hours of sprint drills and then those brutal 400-meter repeats Coach made them run at the end, and her legs were shaking by the time she finished. Her calves were on fire. Her quads felt like someone had beaten them with a hammer.

She wrung out her hair, twisted it until the water stopped dripping, and stepped out onto the cold tile. The steam was already thinning. All the other shower stalls were empty---Maya and Sarah had finished first, then Jenna, their voices bouncing off the walls and then fading as the heavy door swung shut behind them.

God, finally. Peace and quiet.

She walked to her locker, number 17, leaving wet footprints on the floor. Her skin was still pink from the hot water, little goosebumps starting to prickle up on her arms now that the steam was gone. She spun the combination---17-24-6---and pulled the metal door open.

Nothing.

She blinked. Looked again.

Empty. Completely empty. No jeans. No sweatshirt. No bra, no underwear, no sneakers. Her gym bag was gone. Her backpack with her phone and keys and everything---gone. The shelf where she always put her stuff was just bare metal, except for a folded piece of notebook paper.

Chloe's stomach did this weird flip thing. She grabbed the note, her wet fingers smudging the ink...
