The Long Road Home
Chapter 1
by Speck
Adam felt nervous sitting in such close quarters to Matt. He wasn't sure, but something about the feminine boy seemed off - too cheerful and too nice. Matt was a tall and slender bodied senior, about eighteen and still lacking hair in all the wrong places - legs, under arms, not even facial hair. The only distinguishable hair was the stuff on his head; it was dark, short and spikey. The boy didn't look like a woman and he even dressed well. But something in his large flirty-grin and soft yet slightly scratchy laugh, down to an small twinge in his voice (though hardly steriotypical) gave a bitter-sweet justice to the rumors about him.
Now the two sat beside eachother as the schoolbus barrelled toward their highschool at slightly worrysome speed. He'd been paying Adam a little too much attention ever since the shy, eighteen year old had enrolled at Zinsser High. It was a little unnerving and Adam wondered if he put of the aura of a fruit. He himself was shorter, but skinny - almost too skinny. But he presented himself in baggy clothes and drooping dress-shirts, short brown hair combed forward and flattened with gel against his head. He too had little facial hair, but his legs looked as 'manly' as they should at his age, not that he wore shorts enough for anyone to notice. Perhaps it was the way he carried himself, or the faded freckles that seemed to soften up his face. Still, it was an insult for this boy to take such an interest in him. But then, it's not like anyone else had.
"You ready for summer?" Matt asked in his surprisingly pleasant voice. Adam couldn't help but enjoy the sound of his smooth yet somehow gravelly voice. He wondered if he could get away with pretending he didn't hear the boy - doubtful.
"Mhm..." He nodded, cleared his throat, then turned to stare out the window - he didn't want to talk. He could smell Matt's cologne this close - a sweet, perfume-like scent, only more intense and sharper, invaded his nostrils. He felt a little bad for being so rude to the boy, and a little stupid for acting so paranoid around him. After all he was very nice - and if Adam had been gay, this boy would've definately been his prime choice and even recently he'd caught himself staring a little too long at the boy when he smiled that gentle grin. He brushed the thoughts away - had the bus sped up?
