Sparrowhawk: Danger on The Red Queen’s Island

Chapter 1 by jannal jannal

You are Lauren Korso. As the 22-year-old daughter of billionaire industrialist Mark Korso, it would be easy to be just another spoiled “celebutante” and, to most of the world, that is just what you appear to be. Blonde hair, blue eyes and millions of dollars spent on clothes, cars and partying has made you almost a household name.

But you’ve never done things the easy way. And maintaining the facade of Lauren Korso, party girl, might just be the easiest part of your life. Lauren might get the magazine covers and the featured stories on E!, but it is as Sparrowhawk, the costumed crime-fighter, that you make the real headlines. Despite your lack of superpowers, you’re a valued member of the hero community with allies and contacts all across the country.

Your rigorous training has sculpted your body to statuesque proportions, looking good in your skintight sapphire blue costume is just a nice bonus. Tall and athletic with a slim waist and full breasts, your martial arts skills and acrobatic abilities make you more than a match for almost any normal opponent and your high tech gadgets give you the edge you need to take down even some super-powered foes.

Originally, you were just another teen sidekick, working with Golden Eagle, a flying hero who’s mostly known for his detective skills. You learned a lot from him and maintain regular contact, even though in his civilian identity he’s now a Congressman and mostly retired from superhero work. You worked with a number of other young west coast superheroes as a part of the Teen Champions. You finally left the team two years ago since you didn’t want to be another twenty-something ex-sidekick clinging to the ‘good old days’. Since then you’ve been working with Golden Eagle’s old allies in Justice off and on; they’re the world’s premiere hero organization and you’re hoping to earn a full membership someday, just like every other young hero in the world.

Slipping through the skylight of your penthouse condominium, you drop down to the floor disengaging your grappling line and pressing the hidden button on your belt to close the rooftop entrance. Loosening your costume’s collar after a long night of patrol, you take stock of your belt’s inventory: two smoke grenades used when you stopped the liquor store robbery on 15th, six sets of plasticuffs for the perpetrators and some other captured criminals and one sonic shrieker from the mugging you broke up down on 2nd. Your wrist launcher is only down two stun darts, and one tracer dart. All in all, it’s been a good night.

You detach your belt and your launcher, discarding them on the glass coffee table near your couch. You stretch for a moment, still feeling a little tense from the night’s activities. Peeling off your gloves and dropping them on the table you look around the quiet condo, trying to decide what you should do next.

What do you do next?
