Chapter 1: Hospital

"So.... today's the day." I say, sadly.

My name is Gene Taylor. I'm an orphan, who may be saying goodbye to my only friend.

"Yeah... ten more minutes." Samantha replied.

Samantha Hunter. She's my best friend. My only friend. We grew up together. Just us against the world. Her ginger hair framed her pale face, as she looked at me blankly.

It's one of those things everyone knows. When you know someone, you know how they're feeling, regardless of what they're showing.

"You're worried." I stated, looking away.

Samantha was beautiful. Long, ginger hair. Pale skin that could rival Snow white's. A thin figure, with C-cup breasts that verge on being too big compared to the rest of her body. I couldn't think those things. Not in a situation like this.

"It makes sense. I'm... i'm sorry I can't..." I trail, unsure what how to word my apology.

Samantha is dying. The doctors give her a 50/50 chance in her surgery. And it's now zero hour. Pretty shitty 18th Birthday, right?

"Don't. Don't make this final. Please. I'm going to make it through this. I will be fine. Besides... ha, I got the birthday present I wanted." She tells me.

"Which one? You had so many ideas I could write a book." I respond, trying to be light-hearted.

"D.R.S, dummy. " she tells me, grinning. "In seven minutes, I'm going to be immortal."

D.R.S. Is the new fad. The Data Retention Service is a way to keep your 'self' saved in a computer, in case of any accidents.

"You serious? How'd you swing that?" I ask. "Isn't it super expensive?"

"Make a Wish foundation, man." She replies, smiling a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "What better wish is there?"

Before I can reply, an older Doctor enters the room, placing a comforting hand on Samantha's shoulder. It was time.

Samantha takes a deep breath, before she looks in to my eyes. I see the fear. The sadness. She was saying goodbye. Even if she couldn't make her mouth say it. I grabbed her hands in mine.

She looked down at the sudden contact. Despite being teenagers together, we'd never tried any... 'physical contact' together.

"I'll be waiting right here for you, Sam. I won't walk out that door until you're with me. And I promise. I'll come up with some horribly inappropriate joke for when I see you next. Just for you." I promise her, trying to smile.

She returns my smile. I swear, she could have been the creator of Cards Against humanity with how horrible her jokes can be. She leaves, without another word to me. I think both of us were trying to keep it together.

Do you wait?
