Pain. You feel a shock. Your heart beats. You cough, your lungs trying to evacuate the fluid within. You cough again and take a shallow breath. You try to open your eyes but the dim light is blinding. You feel damp and slimy. The bottom of the tube you are in opens and you fall about three feet into a chair. You attempt to open your eyes again. The world is blurry. There are six other people in the room. A hologram appears in the center of the room.

This is your official debriefing. The seven of you have been chosen as the fail safe crew of prison station Omega. Your term of service will be one earth year. As you no doubt are aware the pay is one million credits.

One of the others whistles. With that kind of money you could buy a small planet in an outer system and terraform it, or even a decent sized moon in the Hub.

This prison station contains fifty prisoners. If you remember your history, you will recall memory implantation and mind wipe technology was invented in 2373. Ten years later capital punishment was abolished in favor of mind wiping the worst offenders and implanting new memories. To the surprise of many, a small numbers of these monsters go back to committing atrocities despite being erased and getting a completely new personalitiy. Those that continue to engage in crimes are banished to a prison station, after their third mind wipe.

Your eyes are beginning to adjust. A woman across from you exclaims, "The Christ cult calls them demon souled or the soulless!"

Your job is simple. You are to act as a fail safe and dead man's switch. Should anything go wrong you have the codes to destroy the station implanted in your mind. You are also a dead man's switch. Each day you must enter a code to prevent an auto-destruct mode from engaging. We will be docking imminently.

You peer out the window at a large looming space station orbiting a cold icy planet. Moments later you here the crunching sounds of the ship locking. You and the others stand on wobbly legs and proceed onto the station.

You pass by seven weary, haggard looking people eagerly awaiting your arrival. They pass you not making eye contact rushing to board the ship you arrived on. You make your way to the bridge. You look out a highly polished window at the red dwarf star that is the center of this small star system. You catch your reflection in the glass.
