It is the year 2050. Megacorporations rule most of the world. United States of America is now called UCAS - United Canadian and American States - a tiny husk of its former glory. Technology has advanced in leaps and bounds. Internet has transformed into a virtual reality called the Matrix. Cybernetic augmentation of human bodies is an everyday business at the flesh-clinics. Deadly new viruses have decimated much of the world but the worst calamity to happen was the Awakening.

During the Awakening, magic returned to the world - dragons woke from their long slumber, dwarfs, elves, orcs and trolls returned to the life of men. Terrified mothers gave birth to these demi-humans.

Civil liberties are a memory of the past as are human rights. All that matters is that you work for a corp, spend your wage and don't make any waves...

Unless you are a shadowrunner, of course. Shadowrunners live on the edge, under the shadows of huge skyscrapers - earning a living from doing the dirty jobs of the corporations in their never-ending war in shadows.
