New in Town

Chapter 1 by WrittenSin WrittenSin

Twisting the key, you feel the engine die below you. You open the door and step out into the cool ocean breeze, admiring the view before you. The town of Green Moore was a quaint little seaside town off the coast of the Pacific. It was rather small and unassuming compared to some beach cities, with a relatively small local population, somewhere around 15,000. Even to a young one like yourself, you know that a small population can be a bad thing for your kind: people are noticed missing too quickly. However, it's the nature of the town's economics that drew you...

You see, Green Moore is built entirely on being a tourist trap. Their economy is designed around visitors. Whether simply passing through via the ocean, driving along the interstate Pacific Coast Highway, or attracting visitors outright for the surfing, bed-and-breakfasts, or other not-so-quaint beach activities, the town regularly had hundreds to thousands coming and going every day. Here, if people disappear, it was much easier to make it look like they had simply went on their way rather than something unfortunate that might alert authorities.

It had only been less than a year since you were turned, but it had felt like an eternity. Waking up covered in blood in the middle of a park in Chicago, you were left with no memory of who you were or where you came from. Within that year, you had already drawn far too much attention to yourself as the Chicago Police had begun to investigate the large number of missing person and homicide reports that all matched a similar description. Missing in the middle of the night, drained of blood, large bite marks found somewhere on their body... That's when you decided a change of scenery was worthwhile.

Given one of the unique abilities that comes with being what you are, you found that persuading the old codger to pass on his inheritance to his "dear friend" all too easy. What did it matter that you had only met him several nights before? He died of natural causes and, while his family was certainly suspicious, they could find no sign of falsification as it was him who signed his will over to you and no one else. Security cameras are wonderful things. Everything else went quite naturally and smoothly.

And now here you stand, looking over an unsuspecting town, the newest home-owner of a rather nicely furnished, three-story home. It was set into the forests on the hills bordering the town, providing you plenty of quiet and keeping you away from the prying eyes of any nosy neighbors or wandering tourists. The roughly 20 million in your bank account and the the silver Porsche in your garage were not too bad either.

The night is young and your blood is boiling with the thirst. The lights of Green Moore are twinkling against the ocean backdrop before you. What to do?
