New Family Problems
Making things work
Chapter 1
by gscmar64
I only had two more months then I would graduate with my B. A. with my degree in Marketing. After my last exam I decided to go to the party at the frat house, that was where I met Lynn Webber. She still had a year to go before she would graduate with her B.A. In English Literature. At first we pretty well ignored each other but after a loss at the card table, things changed.
I would like to think I was a gentleman, so when Lynn lost to a rigged hand, I stepped in and paid her bet off. I went to walk away from the game, alone but Lynn came after me. We both returned to the main living room, where we wound up talking for the next hour. Eventually as if natural we wound up making out on the settee, then making our way to a more private place where we got to know each other intimately.
From that point on until I graduated, we were inseparable. Even when the term ended, we would see each other as much as possible. In time I asked Lynn to come for a family dinner so I could introduce her to my mom!
Now mom was a saint! She lost dad when I turned ten. She did everything to make sure I grew up, in her opinion a fine young man. Made me vow to treat females with respect. Worked two jobs so she could afford to send me to College and get my degree in Marketing. The only thing she hoped for in return was me coming back home to help with the family business that dad started before he died.
To my knowledge in all those intervening years, she never tried to replace dad, even when I told her that it was time she lived for more than me. Apparently she took that to heart and while my final year started, she found someone and got engaged to them.
I couldn’t believe that romantically things were changing for the Turners. To celebrate, I convinced mom to have a little dinner party where we could introduce each other to our significant others. She agreed and called to invite her new man over on Saturday Night, while up in my room, I called Lynn over to introduce to Mom.
Meanwhile, I went to work at Turners Grocery. Where I worked at simplifying the books and growing the business dad started. There was already a head boss, Mr. Owen Webber, who had stabilized the business. In all the hours we worked in the same room, neither of us asked each other anything about our personal lives.
As the week went on, I would call Lynn, every chance I got. She said something about her father meeting someone new and that she was going to meet her for the first time, this weekend. Never once did what she said make me connect two and two together
Saturday night finally came and I was in my best clothes when Mom came down the stairs, looking like a million bucks. She had on an evening gown that I have never seen her in before, which showed off a lot of cleavage. The only thing going through my mind, If Lynn had that on, I would take it off her with my teeth!
Then a knock came to the door and Mom started showing nerves. I told her to relax and said I would get the door. Another knock, then I was there opening the door and couldn’t believe who was standing there. Mr. Webber in a three piece suit.
“Jim, what are you doing here?”
“I live here, what are you doing here?”
That was when mom came into the room and rushed over to the door. Mr. Webber and her embraced and kissed before coming inside. As they parted Mr. Webber motioned for someone to come in.
“Mary, Jim, this is my daughter Lynn!”
I don’t know who was more shocked, Mom, Lynn or me!
