"Stephen." Your wife, Amanda, tries to reassure you. "It will be okay."
She can sense the tension building as you get closer to her mother's house, your home for the foreseeable future. It's been a long drive and for most of it you managed to keep your spirits up by not thinking about the destination but now you are close enough to recognise landmarks from your previous visits to Amanda's home town.
"She hates me." You say.
"No she doesn't." She insists. "She doesn't trust men since the divorce. It's not personal."
"It feels personal." You respond.
"This was her idea." She argues. "She wants us there."
"She wants you there." You correct her.
"Well it's not like we have a choice." She says what she's been trying not to. "We've burned through our savings since you lost your job."
You finish the journey in silence.
Amanda's mother, Janet, greets her daughter with a hug. "Welcome home. I've got your old room all ready for you."
You follow Janet upstairs to Amanda's bedroom.
"And You'll be right next door." She says, acknowledging you for the first time.
