What has come before...
Imagine a world just like our own earth, but with several marked differences:
1: Magic is real, and some gifted people, mostly passed down through bloodlines of witches or mages, can use it to accomplish things that defy the laws of physics. However this is not magic like in D&D, mostly magic is subtle and very rarely destructive in nature. Magic advises, assists, invigorates, instructs, and heals; it doesn't protect, purge, or destroy.
2: As a correlated result of this World War II never happened. Adolf Hitler was assassinated by a group of Austrian Patriots in 1936, while in the East Emperor Hirohito staged a coup in Japan that made him the undisputed authority in the country and instituted a number of reforms. Japan, while it seized large areas of the Philippines and other Pacific Islands as "liberators of the Pacific island peoples", steered well clear of China and Hawaii, making WWII a non-event.
Flash Forward to 1989:
The world is a more peaceful place, and technology has advanced differently. Airships are still a thing*, in fact, they are a major component of international air transport, though they can only ply certain routes at select times of the year.
*(Due to Hitler's the Hindenburg Disaster never happened.)
Computer technology has not penetrated into daily life in Japan nearly as much as it did in our own earth, but shortly this will change due to the actions of a group of present college students called the Miyazaki Consortium.
This brings us to one of the pivotal characters of the story, Haiyo Kiki.
Kiki was at this point in her life a 13-year-old Witch, who now had to undertake her "Year of Proving" and live away from home for the first time. She settled in the city of Koriko where she made several good friends including her future boyfriend and then husband Haiyo Tombo, an aspiring Aviation Engineer/Inventor. Many adventures followed which towards the end of the summer resulted in Kiki becoming a international celebrity and proving to the world that magic does in fact exist.
Flash Forward again to 2017: Kiki is an adult, not only that but married and the proud mother of four identical quadruplet daughters, Osono, Ursula, Kokiri, and Madoka, all just turned 18, along with four more younger children; two more daughters and two sons. Her youngest is Tetsuo, now 7, while his middle sister Riku is currently out on her "Year of Proving" somewhere in the "New Provinces of the Southern Islands" and his older brother Ranma is 15 and just entering High School.
This, however, is not a story about Kiki's Younger children, it's a story about Kiki's Quads, who are in their final year of public schooling and intense instruction by their mother before returning to the cities where they spent their year of proving. There they will become the resident Witches of those communities. This is a profession is now a state-sponsored public service post by order of Emperor Akihito. Public Service Witches began in 1989. following the very public revelation of their existence by the Quad's now-famous mother Kiki...

It is a world similar to our own, but with several marked differences. 1: Magic is real, and certain special people can work with it to accomplish things that defy the laws of physics. 2: Adolf Hitler was assassinated by a group of Austrian Patriots in 1938, while in the East Emperor Hirohito staged a coup-de-eta which made him the undisputed authority in Japan for which he instituted massive reforms, and between the two events WWII never took place. Flash Forward to 1989: a 13 year old Witch named Haeyo Kiki goes out on her "year of proving" to learn more about the world and her own place in it. She has several adventures in the city of Koriko and surrounding countryside, including meeting her future boyfriend and then husband Haeyo Tombo and saving his life following an airship disaster, which gains both her and witchcraft generally international attention. Flash Forward again to 2017: Kiki and Tombo's identical quadruplet daughters, Osono, Ursula, Kokiri, and Madoka are just turned 18. They each have gone on their year of proving, and succeed. However, unlike their mother none of them found true love while out in the world for the first time: at least so they think. Each one has several admirers, though, some of them from their childhoods, some from the cities or towns where they spent their year of proving, and some from this newfangled thing called "The Internet". By the end of the year two of them will be in serious relationships, one will be married, and the last one will have discovered she's a polyamorous bi-sexual. This is their story.
