H.M.S Unison.

Patrols.

Chapter 1 by mally01 mally01

Captain Bhanoa stood atop on the sail looking out across the waters of Scapa Flow as H.M.S Unison cut through the choppy waters heading out into the Atlantic for fleet exercises. In the sail with her were the duty watch looking out for obstructions and any ships that were too close. On this brisk early morning, the waters threw up sea spray that washed over the sail drenching the watch crew but Captain Bhanoa did not care. She was the first female commanding officer of an SSBN and also the first British woman with Asian ancestry for which she was very proud.

Once the Unison had cleared the breakwater she went below to the control room where her first officer Commander Helen Grater was in conversation with the navigator. When they saw the captain approach they stopped and greeted her and then the submarine was prepared for diving station. Commander Grater ordered the sail cleared and hatches closed as the captain ordered diving stations and ordered Unison taken to periscope depth. The American exchange officer Tyrone Jackson who was acting as the UK equivalent chief of the boat (cob for short) reported a green board and ordered the ballast tanks flooded.

As the Unison slipped between the waves the sonar operator reported no contacts as they reached periscope depth and levelled off. Captain Bhanoa ordered periscope up and took a look around and confirmed no surface contacts. She ordered the scope down and left the bridge taking her first officer with her. Tyrone who had been given the royal navy rank of warrant officer looked around the control room casting his eye over everyone. The officer of the watch checked the charts with the navigator as they headed down to three hundred feet as per standard departure procedures.

In the captain's cabin, Captain Bhanoa opened her safe and removed the sealed envelope and used her opener to slice the seal open and read the orders.

From Naval Operations London.

TO Captain Bhanoa Commanding H.M.S Unison.

On departure from Scapa Flow, you are to proceed into the Atlantic Ocean and patrol along a course heading towards Greenland.

Upon arrival in the waters around Greenland, you will map the sea bed and report any strange objects found.

Retrieve any samples possible from the sea bed and surrounding water including temperature and salinity.

Send daily coded reports.

From Admiral Farchild.

Commander Grater commented that it was going to be another boring mission and smiled as she prepared to go organise the course and speed. Captain Bhanoa stopped her and pulled her in close for a kiss which she returned then they split and the commander headed to the control room. When she got there she told the navigator the course and ordered 10 knots so they could practice sea bed mapping.
