"I'm telling you to take the plea deal Katie. Honestly, the prosecution is being very generous here...instead of spending 20 years in prison for all your embezzling, you can be a participant in one of the state's new experimental programs for women."

"There's no way you can just get me off all charges is there?" Katie asks.

"No, it's pretty much set in stone. You will be convicted if you don't take this plea offer." Her lawyer replies.

"Fine let me see what the deal entails!" Katie says, snatching the paper away from him and beginning to read it.

"It doesn't say what I'll have to do?" Katie seemed confused.

"It says I won't know until the judge passes sentence. That doesn't seem fair at all."

"Yeah well...it's a tough break for you I guess," her lawyer says, sighing. "I'm really sorry, but essentially, you're not going to know what experimental program you end up in until you go before the court and receive your sentence. All of the options are infinitely better than prison time though, I can assure you."

"That's not the point though is it? I'm going to have to make a decision on this without knowing any of the information, that's not really a choice now is it? It's essentially a gamble. A roll of the dice."

"You can ask for more information from the judge, but you're going to need to make a decision pretty quick. Your trial is going to start soon."

"What are the odds they put me into something really bad?"

"Katie...I'm really not sure what you are expecting here. You're looking at a 20 years, at least, in prison for all this embezzling. I think you should take the offer. I have the timeline details on all the programs, and they are only 6 months to 2 years in length."

Katie sighs.
"Yeah...yeah. Fine, tell the prosecutor I'll accept the plea bargain," she says, looking at her lawyer. "I guess I don't have much of a choice, huh?"
"You really don't," her lawyer tells her.

(The Next Day)

The next day Katie found herself back in front of the judge, ready to hear the sentence.

"Do you accept the plea agreement entered into by your counsel?" The judge asks, staring at her over the edge of his glasses.

"I do, your honor."

"Excellent. In that case, Ms. Thompson, I sentence you to the following: you will serve no prison time, instead you will become the property of the state for at most 2 years. The State of Washington, with the help of federal funding, has developed a variety of experimental programs, one of which will be what you will be assigned to as penance for your crime. You will have no rights and will have to follow all orders and commands given to you by any individual or organization in the program."

"Your Honor, I..." Katie starts, but the judge cuts her off.

"I am not done speaking yet. You are lucky to be here. If this is not satisfactory, then I will be to rethink this decision and give you the 20 years in prison. Is that what you want?"

"No...no...I'm sorry your honor."

"Now here is the sentence..."
Katie shuddered in anticipation.
