Corrupting the Sunnydale Effect

The Scooby gang was in the Sunnydale High's Library staring in shock as Giles spelt out the truth of Sunnydale.

"So let me get this straight," Xander began, "you're telling us that Mayor Richard Wilkens the third, 'everyone's favorite uncle', is also Mayor Wilkens the first and second, and, oh yeah, is also a evil, century old wizard that controls the town to use us as food to get favors from demons?"

Giles just sighed and polished his glasses, "Essentially, yes, Xander. In the records I've discovered, before he bought the land to start the town, natives of the area stayed clear away. It was only after he placed his power base here and create the 'Sunnydale Effect' did people start coming."

"But, but," Willow tried to get out, "He was always so nice, on TV and stuff, I can't believe that he's a monster."

"That's nice," Buffy cut in, "how do we stop him? Because I can't see us just walking up to him and taking him down like we do with vampire crypts"

Giles put his glasses back on, allowing himself a small smile, "Well, it so happens that even century old wizards make mistakes. As you all know the Sunnydale Effect forces people to just accept things, Vampires are gangs on PCP that people with barbeque forks, and for all intents and purposes it is a master work of magical engineering that is near impossible to tear down."

Giles to a moment to allow that to sink in, "But as I said he made a mistake, or rather left a necessary weakness. In order for the Sunnydale Effect to work over so many years it needs to be a bit open ended. A hundred years ago there was no PCP for gangs, the magic needed freedom to be able to adapt to future planning and as such was not fully fixed in it's closing rites."

The group looked between each other before Buffy began, "Um, Giles I think I speak for all of us when I ask 'Huh?'."

Giles snorted, "It means that while we can't take it down we can add someone to it. There is a spell that will allow for additional changes, not big ones, but enough that one person could be allowed the power to people to accept anything they say, do, or want.

"It means that someone could just walk up to the Mayor, Buffy, and kill him, or tell him to go jump off a bridge, or what ever." Giles paused to sigh," The one catch is that the Sunnydale Effect is powered by the Hellmouth and who ever is chosen will have its corrupting influence running through them, so it would be imperative to be able to do the deed as quickly as possible."

A quick look between the Scoobies before Xander spoke up, "So, who get's has to do it?"
