__
For once in your life, you were thinking : was school really worth dropping this early in your life ? You turned eighteen not so long ago, but you dropped school at twelve, and sometimes, you found yourself thinking that this wasn't as good of an idea as you first thought.
You weren't particularly interested in school anyway, what they were teaching being a bit too easy for you to understand, and ever since you started it, you were spending boring day after boring day, knowing that you wouldn't learn anything for years to come, and that you would have to stay bored for far too long before having something interesting to do. And if you weren't all that sure about it, even one of your teachers told you that when you were eleven. As a result, five months after you turned twelve, you simply stopped coming to school, choosing to spend your days doing whatever you wanted.
And what you wanted was usually study a part of the history of your world (which you never quite managed to remember the name, due to... Skipping school) that you found fascinating : the Emergence. What was that, you asked yourself as you were slowly spiraling into the madness of reliving the choices that led up to where you were today ?
It is quite simple, you told yourself, pushing away the fact that spending six years alone left you talking to yourself like you were a bit crazy : the Emergence is an event, that happened hundreds of years ago, leaving your world in a state where technology wouldn't evolve, nor would building techniques do, among others. This event was significant for a simple reason : After it, normal humans weren't the only sentient beings in exitence.
How or why it happened is still a mystery to this day, but the Emergence started with a simple finding : a population of what's called Demi-Humans, humans with animal traits of various origins. One day, they were found, and it looked like all other demi-human populations around the world were found the next day. Our technology, our phones, our cars, and everything else, was a mystery to them, but their strange powers, their magic and knowledge was a similar mystery to us.
And so, for the following hundreds of years, humans did what they do best : enslaving and conducting experiments on them. But it didn't take long for demi-humans to grow tired of this and revolt, resulting in a world war.
For the world of Artonia (this was its name, you finally remembered), it was a first, and a devastating blow to mankind, as demi-humans were stronger, smarter and more resilient than normal humans. In the end, it was a disaster for humans, and even though they ended up making peace with demi-humans. Afterwards, they started learning from each other, and before long, the world was in a state of peace that lasted until now.
This was but one of the things you weren't taught at school, and... The main reason why you stopped going there, you guessed. But here, sitting on your chair, watching the black screen of your computer, that you turned off mere minutes ago, you were maybe starting to have regrets.
You could hear the faint noise of the TV downstairs, which your family left on before going out, as usual. From what you could understand, a certain Gifted had massacred a kind of army attacking a city you didn't understand the name of, and it reminded you.
"Right, the Gifteds." You thought.
Gifteds are a result of the Emergence, beings with powers they gained for some reason, that acted like a more powerful military power, able to contain any magical outbreak or so. Gifteds aren't specifically humans, thye can be demi-humans, as their appearance didn't come with much more than special physical traits, and their magic was usable thanks to special items, like the classic wands.
This made for a world quite interesting in your eyes, and the mere thought of it gave you a smile, after all, nothing was more interesting to you than the mysteries of this world, even the sudden sound of glass breaking...
Wait, a sudden sound of glass breaking ?
This isn't good...

Continuing with the strange worlds topic, we have this time just a slightly wrong world, so close from our own, yet so far. Get a seat, grab a drink, don't mind the people fighting over the possibility of coming back to life, and follow your adventure.
