But if you follow their entire quest through, they offer you tons of exp, an interesting ending, and probably an ultimate weapon or armor. The hero never questions that that pesky guy always limits the party, usually requiring a babysitter or two to keep them safe while the good guys go out and do some silly quest. It's all innocent, right?
