I Examine The Illustration in the Book!
by joe_doe
Chapter 28 in The Diary
The drawing in the book was extraordinary. I recognized the venue immediately as the steps in front of the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon on Bay Street, first built in the 1770s as the customs house for the Port of Charleston. Now a museum, the exterior has changed little over...

Bianca Undresses for a Full "Assessment"
by joe_doe
Chapter 16 in The Diary
A woman can always find reasons to do things that she knows she shouldn't do, when she really wants to do them. I told myself that this was necessary for me to test our business plan, and to fully understand the practices and procedures that I would utilize to send the so-called...

Bianca Goads Jacob
by joe_doe
Chapter 15 in The Diary
There was a presumptuousness, a brazen greediness to Jacob Pennies, that I found most distasteful. Being in his presence rattled... no, revolted me. Seeing him was like seeing a spider crawling across the ceiling or a rat's glowing eyes peering from the darkness. Part of it was t...

Mr. Thornton Takes Me To The Assessor's Office
by joe_doe
Chapter 14 in The Diary
I was surprised when Mr. Thornton returned the very next morning and informed me that he had arranged for us to meet with Judge Roberts at the Parish Assessor's office. He told me nothing during the trip, brushing away my inquiries about what the men were like with a "You'll see...

Mr. Thornton is skeptical of my plan.
by joe_doe
Chapter 13 in The Diary
Mr. Thornton is polite, but dismissive of my ideas. "I don't wish to be unkind, but this is business, and a great deal of money is at stake, so at the very least I need to be honest. It is clear that, as a Yankee, you can't possibly understand our peculiar institution. And as a w...

I beg for the whip!
by joe_doe
Chapter 31 in The Diary
I struggled to breathe as Margaret playfully brushed my flinching, clenching bottom cheeks with the business end of the whip. "Yes," I say quietly. Miss Margaret is not satisfied. Continuing to tease my bottom with the lash, she demands more. "That's not how girls talk to...

You ask to meet the buyers
by joe_doe
Chapter 30 in The Diary
"I want to meet the buyers," I said, still feeling dizzy, and more than a little unsure. "That's a good girl," she said said, her voice oozing condescension as she patted me on the head like a pet that had pleased her. "Now just lay down on your tummy on the bench. That's it. Tu...

I call Manton back
by joe_doe
Chapter 25 in The Diary
"How dare you?" I shouted. "Where did you get that picture?" "Calm down, girl. Yer' actin' like one of them chimps down at the zoo, flashin' her teeth while she's jumpin' round the monkey cage," he chuckled. "I'm not your 'GIRL', or a monkey!" I shouted back. "Ya' sure about t...

A trip into the past
by joe_doe
Chapter 29 in The Diary
The seal of the State of South Carolina seemed to pulse as I watched Margaret open the door, and I watched as one of the leaves of the palmetto tree floated onto the floor. In my condition, I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't, or what awaited me behind the door from the p...

You 'accept' the invitation.
by joe_doe
Chapter 28 in The Diary
"Excellent. You have pluck, and courage. I always keep that in mind when I'm buying animals -- you can tame a wild one, but you can't give them spirit. I've read enough plantation diaries to know there's nothing worse than a lazy colored girl." "I don't like the world "colored",...

You hesitate ... tempted, but unsure.
by joe_doe
Chapter 28 in The Diary
"I'm not sure... Perhaps later," I reply, my voice betraying my trepidation. I'm curious, but am I ready to be alone with Margaret? This is her store, and she's about to take me into the backroom. I definitely feel like I'm on enemy territory. Margaret laughs at my nervousness,...

Visit the antique shop
by joe_doe
Chapter 27 in The Diary
"All The Finest Things" was larger than it looked, because although the storefront wasn't particularly large, the building itself was as deep as it was old. The interior was beautiful, with old stone walls, a wooden floor that was polished but still seemed original, and a tin cei...

Chapter 21 in The Diary
I returned to my hotel, my mind swimming with questions. How much was my diary worth? What would Charles Manton give me for it? Did I want to sell it to him, or give it to a history museum? The latter idea now seemed quaint, as it appeared that he owned all the museums as well as...
