Miles stirs awake to the kind of late April morning that makes it hard to care about first period — pale sunlight cutting through the blinds, birds already loud outside, the air carrying that first real hint of warmth after a long winter.

Senior year is almost over. A few weeks of classes, finals, and then it's done. Somewhere out there, college admissions offices are sitting on decisions that will define the next four years of his life. But right now, on this particular morning, Miles's mind isn't on college.

It's on prom.

Specifically, who he's taking.

There's Janice. Tall, effortlessly beautiful, with a smile that still does something to his chest even after all this time. Miles has liked her since sophomore year, long enough that it stopped feeling like a crush and started feeling like just a fact of his life, like the color of his bedroom walls. He told her how he felt last fall. She didn't laugh, didn't shut him down cold. She just said she didn't want to get attached to anyone before everything changed. Said it wasn't the right time. Miles has replayed that conversation more times than he'd admit, because the way she said it never quite sounded like no.

And then there's Aria. Short, dark-haired, sharp-eyed, and according to basically everyone who pays attention, completely gone on Miles for the better part of a year. It didn't start that way. When they first crossed paths it felt like friction, like she had something to prove around him. It took Miles a while to connect the dots: that the eye rolls and the sarcasm and the inexplicable need to be in his orbit might have had less to do with rivalry and more to do with the fact that his situation with Janice was basically school gossip at this point. Hard to make a move when the guy you like is visibly hung up on someone else.

Janice, for her part, can't stand Aria. That part Miles understands completely.

He lies there for another minute, staring at the ceiling. Two girls. One prom. A handful of weeks to figure it out.
