Out of all the sentient races, Kobolds are certainly along the most unfortunate. Smart and nimble enough to perform complex tasks and form self-sustaining societies, but not smart or strong enough to be able to defend themselves, the small bipedal lizards are prime targets for pillaging and slavery

As a result, it's common for kobold societies to form around powerful "masters" (mostly their distant cousins dragons, also bipedal lizards but much bigger, stronger, smarter, can breathe fire, etc.), exchanging their servitude for protection and guidance. On practical terms it's not that different from being a **** but most kobolds aren't smart enough to realize that

But even among kobolds, Zan's plight is most unfortunate. Born with a very rare condition that makes his scales change color over time, he is considered a prized possession by his dragon masters and was chosen to be their personal servant

It has its perks of course. Even their leftovers are of higher quality than what most kobolds can afford, and being a prized possession means he is rarely mistreated and is often brought along during important meetings or long travels. But that hardly makes up for the rest

Dragons are vain creatures, the female ones especially, so as his mistresses only servant (they would never allow a common kobold such honor) Zan is always very busy. Between dressing, bathing, oiling and massaging the three (all daily duties he had to master) poor Zan barely has a moment for himself

Many kobolds, especially male ones, envy his position. Most kobolds (including Zan) worship the dragon form (and for good reason), so getting to regularly "interact" with it is a common fantasy. But Zan knows in reality he is no more than a servant to them, barely more than an object. They have proper mates, male dragons with which Zan could never hope to compete. And even in their mates long and common absences (they are barely ever present actually), Zan is no more than a sex toy for his mistresses
