Chapter 5

Who wins?
Will wins
The table was quiet.
More than quiet—hushed, like a chapel before a confession.
Three hands lay face-up.
Frank’s queens stared upward—three matching faces, strong and solid.
Jamal’s fingers rested lightly on his cards: Four hearts… and one black spade. A failed flush. Close, but not enough.
And then Will’s hand.
Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine.
A straight.
A win.
No one moved.
Emily stepped forward slowly, the soft pat of her bare feet the only sound against the hardwood.
Will looked up at her like she might disappear. Like he’d imagined this whole thing.
She didn’t speak right away. Just stood beside him, eyes calm, lips unreadable.
Then she nodded.
Deliberate.
Acknowledging.
She turned first to Frank. Her fingers brushed his jaw as she kissed his cheek. It wasn’t cold. It wasn’t warm. It was final.
“Thank you for respecting this,” she murmured. Her hand lingered just a second before falling away.
To Jamal, she offered the same—soft lips against the high ridge of his cheekbone. He didn’t lean into it, but he didn’t pull away. Their eyes met. No words passed. They weren’t needed.
Then she stepped back, looking at them both.
“Nothing ever gets said. Not to anyone,” she said. Her voice wasn’t hard. It was certain.
Both men nodded.
And then they left—Frank with a stiff set to his shoulders, Jamal without a word, just a final glance back that lingered too long.
The door closed behind them.
Now it was just her and Will.
He still hadn’t moved. Not since laying down his cards. Not since watching her cross the room like she owned the air between every breath.
Emily turned to him.
He looked up at her as though expecting judgment, punishment, or worse—acceptance.
Instead, she just stood there, hands at her sides, letting him speak first.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen,” Will said, voice low and fast. “I didn’t even think I’d win. I’m not trying to—like—I’m not gonna push you. I know what it looked like. What it was.”
She didn’t interrupt.
“And I know you don’t have to go through with this,” he said. “Not for me. Not for some stupid game. You can just say no. I won’t be mad. I won’t say anything. Ever.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed just slightly—not in anger, but in quiet appraisal.
“There’s something else,” Will said, voice catching. “I… I need to be honest.”
Her head tilted a fraction.
He licked his lips, heart pounding, and stared at the floor like it might swallow him.
“Two months ago,” he said. “The company picnic.”
She blinked.
“You wore that white dress. There was no bra. I don’t think you planned on staying long, or maybe you just didn’t care. Then the rain hit.”
Emily inhaled slowly.
“You ran off to change. But I saw you. For maybe ten seconds. Soaked through. Standing in the grass. Everyone else was under the awning, but I was by the patio. I was looking at my phone.”
He hesitated.
“And I took a picture.”
She didn’t move.
“I know it was wrong. I didn’t think. I just… you were… I’ve never seen anything so…”
His voice dropped. “I touched myself to that photo that night. And the night after. Every night since.”
Silence stretched.
Will swallowed hard. “I wanted you to know. Because it was a dick move. I shouldn't have done it. That I did makes me an asshole. And this thing is, like, everything I've dreamed about since that night. So you gotta know that I mean it when I say that what Jason did was fucked up. That if you'd offered it to me, I'd have said yes in a heartbeat. Faster even. But like this? It's fucked up. And I'm saying no."
Emily stepped forward. He flinched.
She didn’t slap him. Didn’t lecture.
She kissed him on the cheek.
Her hand grazed his jaw, brief, grounding.
Then she pulled back.
“Thank you,” she said. Not cold. Not warm. Just even.
And walked out of the room.
Will stood there, skin burning where her lips had touched, heart hammering against his ribs like it wanted out.
Then he grabbed his coat and left without another word.
What does Emily do?
