Unwanted Guest
Three days passed.
The House stayed quiet in the walls, content to let the damage settle. Ben had not left the first floor. He moved when told to move, sat when told to sit, and otherwise existed in a gray, hollowed-out silence. The chastity cage remained locked. Violet had stopped checking whether it could be removed. Every time her thoughts drifted toward the memory of the basement, a faint answering pulse of pressure seemed to answer from wherever Ben was in the house, as if the binding still listened.
Vivien drifted through the rooms like a sleepwalker. Sometimes her eyes were her own. Sometimes they were not. No one discussed it.
On the afternoon of the third day the doorbell rang.
Violet was the one who answered.
Hayden McClaine stood on the porch in a light coat, hair neat, expression already sharp with impatience. She looked exactly as she had the last time Violet had seen her: young, polished, and convinced the world owed her something. A small overnight bag sat at her feet.
“Is Ben home?” Hayden asked. No greeting. No small talk. “I’ve been calling. He hasn’t answered in days.”
Violet kept one hand on the edge of the door. Behind her the house felt suddenly attentive, the way it always did when new prey crossed the threshold.
“He’s not available,” Violet said.
Hayden’s eyes narrowed. She looked Violet up and down with open dislike.
“I’m not asking a teenager for permission. Tell him I’m here. Or better yet, move.”
She stepped forward as if she expected the door to open wider. Violet did not move. For a moment the two of them stood in silence on either side of the threshold while the Murder House considered the new variable that had just presented itself.
From somewhere deeper in the house came the faint sound of Ben shifting in a chair and then going still again.
Hayden’s expression tightened.
“I know he’s here. I saw his car. Whatever midlife crisis the three of you are having, it doesn’t change the fact that he made me promises. I’m not leaving until I talk to him.”
Violet felt the House press lightly against the back of her thoughts, curious and already interested in the sharp-edged woman on the porch.
She looked at Hayden for a long second.
Then she opened the door wider and stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Hayden brushed past her into the entryway, bringing the scent of expensive perfume and cold autumn air. The door swung shut on its own behind her with a soft, final click.
The House had a new guest.
And it was already wondering how loudly she could be made to scream.
