Chapter 12

What's next?
The town was under monsters attack
It has been a couple of days since you lent the smaller part of Blue to Elizabeth. You had not heard anything from them since. You wondered if she was getting along with Blue, or if she had done anything with them. You asked Blue what Elizabeth was doing with their split part, and Blue said that Elizabeth was giving them good meals and warm beds to sleep. That didn't answer your question about the experiments, but it seemed like they were being pampered by Elizabeth. That made you feel relieved, and also a bit envious.
While you were waiting in line to register a new quest from the Guild, you suddenly heard the sound of bell ringing. The sound came from the town's bell tower, and it was a sound you recognized as a warning of monsters attacking the town. The adventurers in the guild reacted immediately, forming groups and running out of the building, eager to be the first ones to get to the danger. You too wanted to follow suit, but the guild receptionist stopped you and several others before you could.
"Only C rank and above should go to the front lines. D rank and below, you are to remain in the town and aid the civilians. Now, go"
You were an E-rank adventurer, the second from lowest one, and so you were part of the second group. You were slightly disappointed, but you accepted the order and went outside, with Blue resting on top of your head like a giant squishy hat. You understood you were most likely not strong enough to help and could become a hindrance instead. Besides, most of the higher rank adventurers worked in groups, while you were alone.
When you went outside, you could hear the sounds of fighting in the distance. Screams and the noise of magical spells echoed from the direction of the town's entrances. Thankfully, the town was surrounded by high walls, so the battle was mostly concentrated in several spots. The other adventurers and you spread out, going to wherever you were needed.
You had been helping several people in the commercial district to pack up their wares and get to safety for a while. These street merchant's stuffs were their lifelines. If they left their wares behind, they might not be killed by monsters but they'd die from starvation a week later. Sometime later, you found a familiar face. It was miss Liz, holding a bag. It seemed to contain a lot of bottles, which you suspected was her potion stock.
"Oh, Alexis!" she exclaimed, more happy than surprised, "could you please help me, dear?"
"Miss Liz!" you said as you jogged to her, "are those your potions? Should I bring them to your home?"
"No no, take the bag to the church," she replied as she handed you the rather heavy bag, "it is the temporary center for the wounded. These potions should help save some of them. I'm on my second run and it's getting really tiring"
You nodded and took the bag. Elizabeth said she would go back to her shop to get some more. You told her to be careful before you parted ways and sprinted towards the church, where the injured gathered. By the time you arrived at the church, the main hall was already filled with people. However, most of them were not injured, but instead people whose houses were near the entrances. They were evacuated here because it was too dangerous to stay in their houses.
You looked for anyone who was in charge and found a young priestess who was moving among the restless people. You approached her and explained the situation. The priestess seemed glad to see you and guided you to a secluded area of the main hall. There, the church's clerics had set up a small table with various medical supplies, with priests and priestesses tending to some people with rather grave injuries around it. You recognized some of them as fellow adventurers, with a mix of guards and civilians for the rest. As much as you wanted to ask the adventurers about the situation, you didn't think it was the right moment.
The priestess had you put the bag of potions on the table, and she told you to return to the main hall and help in any way you could. You nodded and left the clerics alone since you didn't know much about helping wounded people, and instead helped the other townsfolk. There were several children among the evacuees who were separated from their parents, and you along with Blue tried to keep them entertained so they wouldn't panic. Some of them were scared of Blue at first, but they accepted the slime's company after some time.
As time passed, more and more injured people were brought into the church. Soon, there were no more room in the main hall, and the uninjured had to make some space in the church's storage area to accommodate everyone. As you were handing pieces of bread and water to the children, you heard the clerics complaining that they had run out of potion to treat the wounds. You suddenly remembered that miss Liz was supposed to come here after she grabbed more potions from her shop, but she had not showed up yet.
What should you do?
Monster Tamer
Taming Monster in a Fantasy World
Monster tamer is considered a weak job class since it's difficult to tame strong monsters, but you are (un)lucky enough to encounter and make a pact with a special monster. Will this lead you to success or your early doom?
