The Ring and the Promise

Iris cradled the ring between her fingers, tilting it so the pendant light caught the diamond sending tiny prisms dancing across the table. “It’s beautiful, Joe,” she said softly, almost reverent. “She’s going to lose her mind.”

The ring had been ready for over a year, hidden in the back of my sock drawer, waiting for the perfect moment. Two dolphins, tail to tail, their noses gently cradling a flawless round diamond; Emily’s favorite animal; designed by me exactly thirty days after our first date. Careers had kept us running in opposite directions, and I refused to wedge the biggest question of our lives between her depositions and my photo shoots.

Iris handed it back, eyes warm. “Be honest; how long have you known she was the one?”

I slipped the ring into its velvet box with a sheepish grin. “What are you, a mind-reader? About a month after our first date.”

She laughed, bright and genuine. “Of course you did.”

Emily and I had always celebrated the little milestones as fiercely as the big ones: our first date, our first kiss, our first “I love you”… often unintentionally one-upping each other. But no matter the occasion, the night inevitably ended the same way: tangled in sheets, breathless, laughing, wrapped in each other.

Iris’s smile softened. “I’m so happy for you guys.” I met her gaze, feeling the depth of it.

“I’m glad you’ll be there tomorrow. Em’s gonna want you in every photo when she says yes. I’m over the moon,” I added, voice catching just a little.

A comfortable silence settled between us, full of shared history and quiet joy. Then Iris cleared her throat, standing. “I gotta finish packing.” She gathered her papers, then pointed a playful but deadly serious finger at me. “Do not forget that ring and screw this up. Uber’s at six sharp. Do not make me drag you out of bed.”

I was never late; punctuality engrained in me; but I let her have the threat anyway. Before she could fire off another warning, I pulled her into a tight hug. She stiffened for half a second, surprised, then melted into it, chin tucking over my shoulder.

“You mean the world to me, Irie. Both of us,” I murmured. “I know,” she whispered back. “I love you guys too.”

I walked her to the door. She paused on the threshold, looking back with a grin. “This time tomorrow… you’ll be engaged.” The door clicked shut behind her.

I exhaled, a slow, steady breath, and glanced at the kitchen; plates to clear, leftovers to put away, suitcase waiting upstairs. I chuckled to myself, the word rolling off my tongue like it belonged there.

“Engaged.”

Most guys would be sweating bullets right now. My hand was rock-steady, the same hand that held a camera, the same hand that ruled an entire erotic domain. Tomorrow I’d rule the rest of my life too; with Emily by my side, ring on her finger, forever starting right then.
