Chapter 15

Does anything happen during chemistry class?
Surprisingly, not really. Guess it's time to go home.
I really expected something notable to happen during chemistry class, but it's largely uneventful. Usually when I use the remote, it doesn't take long for something odd or out of place to happen, but not this time. I do my best to keep an eye on Katia throughout the class, and maybe it's just because I don't know what she normally acts like, but I can't find any noticeable signs of her attribute affecting her. That's a bit of a disappointment, but I guess they can't all be winners right away.
Eventually, Professor Jones dismisses us and everyone starts packing up their stuff. As I'm getting ready to head out, I see Katia has her hand on her head as though she feels some sort of pain. That doesn't seem good. I hope that doesn't have anything to do with what I did to her.
"Hey, Katia? Are you feeling okay?"
"Uh, yes, I am fine, thank you. I just got a weird headache suddenly." Weird headache? As far as I know, that hasn't happened with any other girl I've used the remote on. Katia then stands up quickly, losing her balance for a split second as she does. "Goodbye, Matt. I will see you next class."
"Uh... bye, Katia."
Katia begins to leave, but about halfway towards the door, she stops. It looks like she thinks to herself for a moment before turning around and walking back toward me.
"Actually, before I go, can we exchange phone numbers? I do not have the contact information of any other student here, and you seem very nice."
That came out of nowhere. Again, it's hard to tell if this is happening because of some convoluted effect that Katia's attribute is having on her brain or if this is just how she is. Either way, I don't see any reason not to trade phone numbers with her, so we take a moment to do so before we head off in separate directions. Hey, if nothing else, I ended chemistry class with a cute girl's number, so I guess that could be considered a win.
I head back to the bus stop and get a ride back home. I could once again go on about a few of the random, uninteresting people on the bus, but I think the idea is clear at this point, so I'll skip it. I get back home to find that I'm the only one there. It shouldn't be too long before the rest of my family start getting back home, but for now, I let the peace and quiet wash over me.
I head up to my room, put my stuff away, and sit at my desk. I'm about to go online to waste time with some kind of video, but first I decide to check my email. When I do, I notice I received an email earlier today that's marked as urgent. When I look at who the sender is, I see that it's from the school. Not a specific person who works at the school like one of my professors, but from the school itself. That can't be good. You never want to receive an urgent anything from the school you go to. Unsure of what to expect, I open the email and read it carefully.
Dear Matthew Anderson,
We have received a recent report claiming that you have been harassing a member of our faculty. We at North Ridge University take these kind of allegations very seriously and have elected to immediately investigate this report so as to ensure the safety and prosperity of our institution. As such, we are requiring that you meet with Dean Sanders at 9am this Friday in the Office of the Dean of Students to discuss these allegations. Failure to attend this meeting without a valid excuse will result in academic probation until the conclusion of the investigation. For any questions concerning this email, please contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
God dammit, Dr. Powell! Even when I finally think I've taken her down a peg, she goes and does this! I guess even though her attribute made it harder for her to fight back while I was belittling her, it didn't stop her from telling other people about it. In retrospect, I suppose I shouldn't have pushed as hard as I did, especially so early. But with Dr. Powell, who knows how little it would have taken to set her off like this. Besides, I felt like I needed to make a strong first move with her.
Now I have to go see the dean on Friday morning. Great. What day even is it today? Let's see, this was my second time going to history and chemistry this week, which makes today Wednesday. Huh. Guess I let that detail slip by up to this point. That doesn't give me a ton of time to prepare. Not that more time would help me much. I mean, what exactly am I supposed to say?
I hear the front door open. That's probably Julia getting back from her own classes. For now, I'll try to put this email out of my mind and worry about it later. There's no use stressing over it at this point. I can come back to it when I've had a chance to calm down and think more clearly. And if there's anything that could help get my mind of it right now, it's talking to my sister. I head downstairs and find Julia already relaxing on the couch. She smiles when she sees me and asks me to join her so we can gossip (her words, not mine).
Time flies as we talk, and before long, Michelle and Mom both get back home from work. I actually kind of forgot about the two of them at this point. It hasn't even been 24 hours since I used the remote on them, but man has a lot happened in that time. I've already used the remote on three more people, even though one of them was a bit of an accident. Perhaps this could be a good opportunity to see how much more the two of them have changed after having their attributes for almost a full day.
How do you check on your mother and sister?
