Prom Night

Senior prom. Two words that have been hanging over this entire year like a deadline that kept getting closer without ever quite feeling real. Now it is here.

Miles stands in front of the mirror in his bedroom, black tuxedo on, taking stock. He looks like someone who has somewhere important to be tonight, which for once is entirely accurate. Outside his window the neighborhood looks the same as it always does but everything feels slightly elevated, the way ordinary things do when you know you are standing at the edge of something that will not come around again.

Tonight is the night that the last few weeks have been building toward. The stat points, the choices, the conversations that ran longer than they should have, the moments that meant more than he let on. All of it has been pointing here.

Somewhere across town his date is getting ready. She has no idea what kind of night he has in store, or maybe she does and that is exactly why she is taking her time.

The prom king votes have been cast. The valedictorian scores are locked in. The newsletter quote is already old news to everyone except the people it affected most. Whatever is going to happen tonight is going to happen regardless of whether he is ready for it.

He takes one last look in the mirror, grabs his keys off the dresser, and heads out.

Time to go pick her up.
