What's next?
Prologue: Meet with Goodbye and then contact the team
In a strange twist, you finally seemed to have netted a mission that would put you in the traditional role of a handler: working in the office alongside administration to dictate orders to your agents in the field. After the few heart-pounding, high-risk adventures you'd been involved in thus far, you couldn't tell if you were ready to get to the easy stuff, or if doing something like this was a waste of your skills. Whatever the case, Goodbye had requested you assist her in this capacity while the Goodbye Girls team flew out to Berlin. At this point, they were probably about thirty minutes out from their mission objective. You hoped Goodbye had given them a generous briefing already.
Goodbye nodded her brunette, beehive-quaffed head upon seeing you; perhaps she would have said something, but her mouth was currently being used to down an unhealthy quantity of coffee in one big gulp from that silly #1 Boss mug of hers. You decided to take the reigns: you told the Goodbye Girls that you'd arrived and were ready to begin the final stages of pre-mission prep.
The boss shook her head, then pointed at a glass bulb on the dashboard, currently toggled into the off state. A statement beneath it on an LED board helpfully read: "NO SOUND." Goodbye set down her mug and then adjusted her glasses. "I've got sound off for now. We should talk about the real reason all of the Goodbye Girls were called off onto one mission, first."
You supposed you should have expected this. It seemed like the reason you were here in mission control while all of your Girls were deployed to the field at once was so that your boss could ensure the two of you could talk without being listened in on. It seemed like quite a reason to deploy a Gambit and four elite agents into the field...
"I hope the dossiers are coming well, but I think it's time we heard from the horse's mouth: where do your suspicions lay? You've had some time to get to know the girls by now. I need your earnest opinion of who we should be watching out for. It goes without saying that this is the most important task you're currently performing for CEDIT... We cannot afford for these dangerous elements to act against our interests." The boss seemed to be asking for miracles... you hadn't had nearly enough time yet to decide who the mole was! But had you formed some opinions? Or... were you simply going to have to wing it? Did you even mistrust any of the girls? Goodbye continued on with what sounded to you like a heavily rehearsed speech. "I know you may think of them as your allies now, but I'm sure that each of your predecessors had those same thoughts in their heads before they d-d-d-died!" Okay, maybe not that rehearsed. "Don't you get it, Ciao?! Those girls could kill us! You've gotta tell me who you think is the bad apple!"
Conflicted, you opened your mouth to give your opinion, then closed it as she raised one finger to interrupt you.
"Wait! Actually, I just realized, we should have you contact the girls. They're uh... kinda directionless right now, other than 'Bwaaah, grrrr, Deliverers baaad, smaaash,' so the least we could do is tell them who's in charge of tactics for the mission. Someone should be designated the de facto leader while you're not on the ground with them. Do you have anyone in mind?"
Sheesh... You were already busy with one difficult thought process when Goodbye dumped another tough decision on your shoulders. Furthermore, she barely gave you a moment to think; just seconds later, she flipped on the comms. "Hello... Girls?"
"Heeeello, Boss Lady!" That chipper voice could only belong to Au Revoir, the chattiest member of the group. "Is New Ciao there as well? We are headed to Berlin! I will bring you back a fine ale!"
"Don't expect me to bring you anything..." That grumpy, scolding voice that seemed cross even when you hadn't done anything sounded like Tschau.
"I'll bring you success in an important mission... hm hm..." That one was Vaarvel. "So, you're going to tell me that I'm in command while you're off in Washington, right?" ... She was as pushy as ever.
... Despedida didn't say anything. She probably had her headphones in and was playing some sort of game.
Goodbye was biting her lip, as though she was afraid to even talk to the group. She nodded at you eagerly, urging you to answer the question instead of making her do it. So... who among the Goodbye Girls was the best choice to lead their mission without you, anyway?
Who will you pick to be the field commander?
