Momentary Escape

Chapter 13 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

Night had fully claimed the Murder House by the time Violet managed to leave the master bedroom.

She moved through the upstairs hallway like someone walking underwater. Every step sent a dull, saturated ache through her body. Her thighs were sticky. The thin dress she had pulled back on clung to the drying mess between her legs. Pale fluid still leaked out of her in slow, cool trickles that the House seemed to savor. She could feel it watching through the walls, pleased with how thoroughly it had used her and her mother.

Vivien remained in the bedroom. The House still wore her like a favorite coat. From the doorway Violet had watched her mother (or what was left of her) stretch out across the ruined sheets and smile at the ceiling with someone else’s satisfaction. The Pale Man had folded himself back into the shadows for now, but the air still carried the faint sweet cold of his presence.

Violet needed air that did not taste like sex and old plaster.

She made it as far as the living room before her legs gave out. She sank onto the couch, pulled her knees up, and stared at nothing. Her cunt throbbed in time with her heartbeat. Every shift of fabric reminded her of long pale fingers and her mother’s tongue and the way the House had laughed with Vivien’s mouth while the Pale Man fucked her open.

Time passed in strange, elastic stretches. The clock on the mantel said it was after ten. She had no memory of the hours between.

Headlights swept across the front windows.

A car door closed. Footsteps on the porch. The front door opened with the ordinary sound of keys and a tired man coming home.

Ben.

The second he crossed the threshold the air in the house changed. The thick, syrupy pressure that had sat on Violet’s skin for hours thinned. The watching presence in the walls recoiled like something burned. Upstairs, a soft, wounded sound drifted from the master bedroom as the House’s grip on Vivien slipped.

Violet sat up straighter, heart slamming.

Ben dropped his bag by the door and loosened his tie the way he always did. He looked exhausted. Ordinary. Human. The sight of him felt almost violent after the long fever-dream of the afternoon and evening.

“Violet?” He frowned when he saw her on the couch in the dark. “Why are all the lights off? Where’s your mother?”

The House’s influence continued to drain out of the rooms like water finding a crack. Violet could breathe properly for the first time in hours. The ache between her legs was still there, but it belonged to her body again instead of the walls. Upstairs she heard movement. A soft, confused noise that sounded much more like Vivien than the thing that had been wearing her.

Ben started toward the stairs.

Violet stood on unsteady legs. Reality was reasserting itself in jagged pieces. The memory of what the House and the Pale Man had done to them both sat in her mind like a second heartbeat, too vivid to be a dream, too impossible to say out loud.

She opened her mouth.

For a moment she had no idea what would come out.
