Vivian Retreats
Vivien’s fingers tightened once more on the bedpost.
She looked at Violet for a long, charged second. At the open dress. At the wet shine on her daughter’s fingers. At the clear, unspoken offer in Violet’s eyes. Something raw and hungry moved across her face. Then it shut down.
Vivien stepped back.
The distance opened between them like a door closing. She pulled her robe tighter around herself, covering the soft skin that had been showing, and smoothed the fabric with hands that were not quite steady.
“I can’t,” she said. Quiet. Final. “We can’t.”
Violet’s hand stilled between her legs. The ache there pulsed harder at the loss of the moment. She did not close her knees. She did not look away.
“Mom.”
Vivien shook her head once. The movement was small but absolute. She turned toward the door without another word. Her bare feet made almost no sound on the floorboards as she left the room. The hallway swallowed her. A moment later the soft click of the master bedroom door closing drifted back.
Violet stayed on the bed, dress still rucked high on her thighs, fingers still slick. The house settled around her again, ordinary and listening. Afternoon light kept cutting the same dusty bars across the floor.
She drew a slow breath and let it out.
Her choice had been made.
So had the Houses.
