The Ember of Passion
Xilonen had prepared for a proper, uninterrupted sleep with the seriousness of a woman who guarded her weekends like sacred ground.
Drink finished. Forge banked. Door locked. The group outside had been given clear boundaries and a hard noon deadline. Tomorrow she would send them away with the same flat refusal and tell them to come back the day after. Simple. Clean. No problem at all.
She stripped, settled nude into her bed, and closed her eyes.
Her mind refused to cooperate.
It was not arousal. There was no sudden heat between her legs, no restless shift of her hips, no hunger for the man currently sleeping a few rooms away. What kept spilling into her thoughts was pure, relentless analysis. Aether’s form — the exact angle of his hips when he had been inside the adeptus, the micro-adjustments of depth, the timing of his thrusts against the subtle signs of approaching climax — replayed behind her eyelids with infuriating clarity. She catalogued errors most people would never notice: a half-degree of wasted motion in his lower back, a fraction of a second too much speed at the wrong moment, a grip that could have been adjusted to free one hand without losing control.
And still.
The technique he already possessed was considerable. The potential was obvious. The way the ancient adeptus had softened and opened under him had been as clear as a perfectly quenched blade. He was not refined — not by the standards she applied to her own craft — but the raw material was excellent. With proper guidance he could be so much better.
An ember stirred somewhere in the tired depths of her chest.
It was not sexual desire. It was the older, quieter fire that had once driven her to chase absolute perfection in every piece she forged. The same creative hunger that had gone cold years ago when the people around her stopped improving and she herself ran into the hard ceiling of what bodies and stamina could achieve. Sex had turned stale for exactly that reason. Once every variation had been mastered and no partner could offer a new problem worth solving, the ambition that had fueled her simply extinguished.
Now a new problem had walked into her forge, fucked an adeptus with visible room for improvement, and then accepted her offhand corrections without ego.
Xilonen stared at the dark ceiling of her room, nude and wide awake, and felt the long-dormant ember of pure craftsmanship flicker back to life against her will.
She was still on weekend.
She was still going to tell them to come back later. But the part of her that lived for perfecting difficult things had just found a new project, and it was not going to let her sleep as easily as she had planned.
