The Visit

Chapter 10 by sexycooldude

A couple days passed. Alex went to work like normal. Made coffees. Wiped counters. Watched the door without meaning to. He had almost stopped expecting her. Almost.

She came in late afternoon. Looked tired. Hair a little messy. She walked straight to the counter but didn’t smile the way she used to.

“The usual,” she said. Voice quiet. Polite.

He nodded. Made her coffee. Added the extra sugar without asking. Handed it over. Their fingers brushed for half a second. She pulled her hand back fast. Like she caught herself doing something she shouldn’t.

“Thanks,” she said. Paid. Turned and went to her usual table by the window.

She stayed longer than she needed to. Worked on her laptop but kept glancing up. Not obvious. Just quick looks when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. Once their eyes met and she looked away right away. But a few minutes later she gave him a small smile. Barely there. Then went back to her screen.

He felt it in his chest. She came back. That had to mean something. But everything was different. Careful. Like she had put up a wall after the kiss.

Near closing she came back to the counter. Stood there for a second like she was deciding something.

“Hey,” she said. “About the psych notes. I was thinking maybe the library this weekend. If you still want to study. It’s usually quieter there on Saturdays.”

He swallowed. “Yeah. Okay. That works.”

She nodded. Lingered. Her hand rested on the counter close to his but didn’t touch. “You seem quiet lately. Everything okay?”

He shrugged. “Yeah. Fine.”

She looked at him a second longer. Like she wanted to say more. Then she just nodded again. “Okay. Saturday then. Two o’clock?”

“Sure.”

She left after that. No arm touch. No warm goodbye. Just walked out with her bag.

Alex watched her go through the window. Heart doing that stupid fast thing again. She had come in. She had suggested studying. She had asked if he was okay. But the distance was there. The quick pull back from his hand. The short words. The change from her place to the library. All of it said she was still hurt. Still protecting herself after he froze on her doorstep.

He closed up the cafe slow. Went home. Ate nothing. Sat on his bed with his phone.

He typed. “Library Saturday at 2 sounds good.”

Sent it.

She replied after twenty minutes. “Okay. See you there.”

Short again. No smiley. No extra words.

He lay back. Stared at the ceiling. The visit played on repeat. The way she pulled her hand away. The glances she thought he didn’t see. The small smile she gave anyway. The way she asked about him. She was conflicted. He could feel it even if he couldn’t see inside her head. Part of her still wanted to be close. Part of her was scared now. Scared he didn’t want her the way she wanted him.

His mind went back to the kiss. How soft her lips had been. How long she stayed pressed against him. How good it felt even though he didn’t move. He got hard just thinking about it. Shifted under the blanket. Felt guilty and frustrated at the same time. He wanted her. Wanted to fix what he broke. Wanted to kiss her back for real and show her she wasn’t wrong to try.

But the signs were clear. She was pulling back to keep herself safe. And he didn’t know how to reach her without pushing her further away.

He turned on his side. Phone dark on the pillow next to him. The quiet want in his body mixed with the heavy feeling in his chest. He had caused this. Her hesitation. Her careful distance. Now he had to figure out how to show her he wanted her without screwing it up again.

Sleep came slow. Full of her small smile across the cafe. And the memory of her lips. And the sick worry that the pull between them was getting thinner every day he stayed quiet.
