Past Midnight
Saturday came. Alex showed up at the library at two like they planned. Mia was already there at a table in the back corner. Books open. Notes spread out. She looked up when he sat down and gave him a small smile. Not the big warm one from before. But it was something.
They got to work right away. They were behind. The psych test was coming up fast and neither of them had done enough. She quizzed him on the chapters he missed. He explained the parts she kept mixing up. They took turns writing notes. Focused. Serious. The kind of study that made time disappear.
Hours passed. The library got quieter. Most people left. The lights dimmed in some sections. They stayed. She brought a bag of chips and shared them without asking. He got them both coffee from the vending machine when it got late. She remembered he liked it sweet and added extra sugar packets before handing his cup over.
Her knee touched his under the table early on. It stayed there. Warm through her jeans. He didn’t move away. Neither did she. Every time she leaned in to show him something on her page her shoulder brushed his arm. Her hair fell forward and smelled like that same sweet shampoo. Late at night it felt different. Closer. The whole library felt like it belonged to just them.
He kept catching himself staring at her mouth when she talked. Remembering the kiss she gave him. The way she ran after. His body reacted to the memory. Tight warmth low in his stomach. He shifted in the chair and felt guilty. She was here studying. Not thinking about that. But the want was there anyway. Stronger with every hour they stayed close.
Around one in the morning she yawned and rubbed her eyes. “We should probably stop soon. It’s getting really late.”
He nodded but didn’t pack up. “We’re still behind though. One more chapter?”
She looked at him for a second. Then smiled a little. “Okay. One more.”
They kept going. Her voice got softer when she was tired. She laughed at his dumb tired jokes. Once she reached over and touched his arm when she was explaining a concept. Left her hand there longer than needed. He felt the heat of it even after she pulled away.
By two in the morning the library was almost empty. Just a couple other people far away. They finally closed the books. Started putting things in bags slow. Neither of them moved to leave right away.
She stood up and stretched. Looked at him across the table. Eyes tired but soft. “Thanks for staying so late with me. I would’ve given up hours ago without you.”
He stood too. Heart beating harder now that they weren’t buried in notes. This was it. The moment. He could feel the old fear trying to come back. The voice that said she didn’t really want him. That he would freeze again. That she would run.
But he didn’t listen this time.
He stepped around the table. Close to her. Looked at her face in the low light. She didn’t step back. Just watched him. Waiting.
He leaned in and kissed her.
Slow at first. Careful. His lips on hers like he was asking. Then deeper when she kissed him back. Her mouth was warm and soft. She tasted like the chips and coffee from earlier. He put one hand on her waist without thinking. Pulled her a little closer. She made a small sound and leaned into him. Her hands came up to his chest. Not pushing away. Holding on.
It felt like everything he had been holding back for weeks. The glances. The touches. The nights thinking about her. All of it poured into the kiss. He didn’t freeze. Didn’t overthink. Just kissed her like he had wanted to since the first time she touched his hand at the cafe.
They stayed like that for a long minute. Breathing each other in. Her body pressed against his in the quiet library. Then they pulled back slow. Foreheads almost touching.
She looked up at him. Eyes a little wide. A real smile this time. Soft and happy. “Took you long enough,” she whispered.
He laughed quiet. Nervous but relieved. “Yeah. Sorry about that.”
She didn’t let go of his shirt. Just stayed close. “It’s okay. I’m glad you did it now.”
They packed the rest of their stuff in silence. Walked out of the library together into the cool night air. Her hand brushed his as they walked. This time she didn’t pull away. She let her fingers hook with his for a second before letting go.
At the corner where their paths split she turned to him again. “Text me when you get home?”
He nodded. “Yeah. I will.”
She stepped in and kissed him once more. Quick and sweet. Then walked away toward her apartment. He watched her go until she turned the corner.
On the walk home his heart wouldn’t slow down. He had done it. Finally. Kissed her like he meant it. And she kissed him back. Stayed close. Smiled like that. The old frustration was still there in the back of his head. The worry that he would mess it up again. But it was quieter now. Drowned out by the memory of her lips and the way her body felt against his.
He got home and lay on his bed. Phone in his hand. Typed the message like she asked.
“Home safe. Thanks for studying with me tonight. And for everything else.”
She replied fast.
Mia: “Anytime. I had fun. Even if we’re still behind lol. Sweet dreams Alex :)”
He stared at the smiley and the words. She was still there. Still wanting this. The kiss hadn’t scared her off. It had done the opposite.
He closed his eyes. Body still warm from the memory. The want was stronger now. Real. He could still feel her hand on his chest. Still taste her. Still hear that little sound she made when he pulled her closer.
For once he didn’t feel guilty about it. He felt hopeful. Scared still. But hopeful.
Sleep came easier than it had in weeks. Full of her. And the quiet pull that finally felt like it was going somewhere.
