Chapter 38 by jj0445 jj0445

What's next?

Continue exploring the town

By the time the band finishes their second set, the sun has started lowering slightly across the coastline.

The light turns warmer afterward, softer against the ocean while long shadows stretch across the sand and pier. The crowd around the musicians slowly begins thinning out as people drift back toward the boardwalk and nearby restaurants.

Jane stays tucked comfortably against your side while both of you walk away from the beach together, her fingers still loosely intertwined with yours.

“That was REALLY good,” she says softly.

You nod immediately. “Yeah. They were tight.”

“You’re doing the musician analysis thing again.”

“What thing?”

“The thing where you stop listening emotionally and start evaluating harmonies,” Jane teases.

You laugh quietly because honestly?

She’s not wrong.

“The percussion setup was sick though,” you admit.

“Mhm,” Jane replies smugly. “Nerd.”

A few minutes later the two of you end up near a beach bar built partially out over the water. String lights hang across the patio while soft music drifts from outdoor speakers and groups of people sit around little fire tables facing the ocean.

Immediately Jane slows slightly beside you.

“Oh wait,” she says softly. “This place is cute.”

You glance over toward the patio.

Honestly?

She’s right.

The entire place has that warm coastal atmosphere that feels impossible not to relax in. Ocean wind moves softly through the open-air seating area while bartenders slide colorful drinks across polished wood counters beneath hanging lights.

“You wanna stop here for a little?” you ask.

Jane looks up at you immediately. “Yes.”

A few minutes later, both of you stand together at the outdoor bar while sunlight reflects gold across the ocean behind it.

Jane leans lightly against the counter beside you while looking over the drink menu, one leg crossed casually over the other.

“Ooh,” she says immediately. “Frozen drinks.”

“That reaction worried me instantly.”

“You should trust me more,” Jane replies proudly.

“That has historically gone badly.”

She gasps dramatically before lightly bumping her hip against yours.

The bartender walks over a second later while drying off a glass towel.

“What can I get you guys?”

Jane immediately points at something near the top of the menu. “That one looks dangerous.”

The bartender laughs. “It absolutely is.”

“Perfect,” she replies confidently.

You shake your head while ordering your own drink afterward.

A few minutes later, the bartender slides both drinks across the counter while ocean wind drifts softly through the patio around everybody sitting nearby.

The whole atmosphere feels warm and relaxed.

Couples talking quietly.

Music humming through overhead speakers.

Waves crashing softly beneath the deck below.

And somehow standing there beside Jane with the sunset reflecting across the water already feels dangerously easy to get lost in.

Jane takes the first sip of her drink before immediately lighting up.

“Oh no,” she says dramatically.

You laugh quietly. “What?”

“This is dangerous.”

“That good?”

She points at the drink seriously. “This tastes illegal.”

You shake your head while smiling.

Then a second later she steals your drink too.

“Hey.”

“I’m comparing,” Jane replies casually.

“You’re committing theft.”

“I’m exploring flavor profiles.”

Unfortunately, she somehow says it confidently enough to almost sound believable.

The two of you eventually move toward the patio railing afterward, leaning beside each other while watching sunlight shimmer across the ocean below.

At one point Jane rests lightly against your shoulder while sipping her drink.

“This trip’s been really nice,” she says quietly.

You glance toward her.

Warm evening light catches softly against her face while wind moves through her hair, and honestly she looks so pretty it almost hurts a little.

“Yeah,” you admit softly. “It has.”

Her expression softens afterward before she takes another sip.

Then eventually she looks back toward you with a small grin.

“So,” Jane says casually while swirling the drink in her hand slightly, “are we being responsible tonight?”

You laugh quietly.

Because honestly?

You know exactly what she means.

The drinks are strong enough already that you could both stop after one and stay relaxed, comfortable, mostly sober while enjoying the beach atmosphere together.

Or…

You could absolutely keep drinking with her.

Let the evening loosen up more.

Let the flirting get warmer. The touching get clingier. The conversations get softer and less filtered while both of you get progressively tipsier together beside the ocean.

And judging by the expression on Jane’s face?

She’s clearly open to either option.
