Chapter 39 by jj0445 jj0445

What do you decide?

One more drink won’t hurt

One drink turns into two surprisingly easily.

Mostly because neither of you really wants to leave yet.

The sunset keeps getting prettier across the ocean while music hums softly through the patio speakers overhead, and every time one of you finishes a drink, the other somehow ends up suggesting another round without much resistance.

“This is your fault by the way,” you tease while the bartender slides another pair of drinks across the counter.

Jane gasps dramatically. “Excuse you?”

“You introduced frozen **** into the situation.”

“You agreed VERY quickly,” she replies smugly.

Unfortunately?

She’s completely right.

At some point the atmosphere shifts slightly around both of you.

Not messy drunk.

Just warm.

Looser.

The kind of tipsy where everything feels softer and funnier than normal.

Jane gets clingier first.

You notice it when she starts standing closer against your side near the railing overlooking the water, one hand loosely hooked around your arm while she talks.

Then eventually she just fully leans against you with zero hesitation.

“You’re comfy,” she murmurs softly against your shoulder.

“You’ve said that before.”

“Because it remains true,” Jane replies seriously.

You laugh quietly while wrapping an arm around her waist automatically.

The ocean wind moves softly through her hair while string lights begin glowing overhead across the patio as evening settles farther in around the beach.

Everything feels warm.

The drinks.

Her body pressed against yours.

The sound of waves below the deck.

And the more relaxed she gets, the touchier she becomes too.

At one point while laughing at something you say, she casually slides into your lap sideways near the railing like it’s the most natural thing in the world, one arm looping loosely around your neck while she steals a sip from your drink.

“Oh my god,” you laugh quietly. “You’re attached to me right now.”

“Mhm,” Jane replies proudly before kissing your cheek.

A few minutes later she’s absentmindedly tracing her fingertips along your forearm while talking. Then eventually playing with your fingers. Then lightly scratching through your hair while resting against your chest.

It’s constant.

Every few seconds she’s touching you somehow.

And honestly?

It completely destroys your ability to think normally.

At one point Jane tilts her head up toward you while absentmindedly tracing little circles against your chest through your shirt.

“You have really pretty eyes,” she says suddenly.

You blink once. “You’re drunk.”

“I’m correct,” she replies immediately.

You laugh harder while she smiles proudly at herself afterward before taking another sip of her drink.

Then a few minutes later:

“You’re also very handsome.”

“Oh my god.”

“And funny.”

“Okay now you’re definitely drunk.”

Jane narrows her eyes while lightly poking your chest.

“I’m emotionally observant.”

“You’re buzzed.”

“Mhm,” she replies casually. “And emotionally observant.”

Honestly?

Watching her get affectionate when she drinks might actually destroy you.

Because every compliment comes out softer now.

More honest.

Like the **** just lowers whatever tiny filter normally exists in her brain.

At one point she just stares at you for a second too long before smiling softly to herself.

“What?” you ask.

“You’re my favorite person,” Jane says quietly.

And yeah.

That one hits directly in the chest.

Eventually the sky shifts deeper orange and pink across the horizon while the patio crowd grows louder around both of you.

People laugh near the fire tables.

Music drifts from farther inside the bar.

A couple nearby starts dancing slowly beside the railing overlooking the ocean.

And suddenly the crowded atmosphere starts feeling like a lot.

Not bad.

Just… loud compared to how peaceful the rest of the day has felt.

Jane notices it too eventually.

“You wanna go walk?” she asks quietly while resting her chin against your shoulder.

You nod immediately.

Honestly, that sounds perfect.

A little while later, the two of you leave the beach bar together beneath glowing string lights while the ocean breeze hits softly against your skin outside.

The evening air feels cooler now compared to earlier.

Jane immediately slips both hands around your arm while walking beside you down the beach path, still slightly tipsy and very attached to you physically.

“You know,” she says softly after a minute, “this might be my favorite day we’ve had in a while.”

You glance toward her.

Her cheeks are slightly flushed from the drinks while ocean wind moves through her hair beneath the fading sunset light.

And honestly?

Your chest tightens a little hearing that.

“Yeah?” you ask quietly.

“Mhm,” Jane replies while leaning against your shoulder again. “Today just felt… easy.”

The shoreline stretches quietly ahead of both of you while waves roll steadily beside the path below.

And somehow, with her hanging onto your arm beneath the warm evening sky, the entire world suddenly feels very far away.
