The Door Opens (Multiple POVs)

(Kate’s POV)

The ride up in the elevator felt like an eternity stretched thin. I’d overheard the front-desk staff gossiping as I passed; two women, voices low but not low enough. “Another noise complaint from floor 8,” one said. “Again?!” the other shot back. “I don’t know if I should feel sorry for those girls… or be jealous of his stamina.”

My heart stuttered. Girls. Plural. The word landed like a match on dry tinder. Someone else had said it; confirmed it. Joe had made both of them moan loud enough for the entire floor to hear. The driver had already given me that wide-eyed, flushed look when I asked if he’d heard anything on the way back. “Yeah… those ladies weren’t very quiet,” he’d muttered, cheeks burning. When the elevator doors opened, reaching floor eight, I understood what the front-desk staff were talking about.
