Chapter 5

What next?
Push it further
The room was still.
Emily stood nude beside the bench, towel draped over her forearm, steam-softened gym clothes folded neatly beside her. Her skin was still flushed from the workout, her breasts heavy and pink-tipped, the faint sheen of sweat on her thighs starting to cool in the sterile locker room air.
The cracked mirror across the room glinted faintly again.
But it wasn’t just that one.
She started to realize—there were a lot of mirrors in here.
More than she’d ever truly noticed before.
It wasn’t just the mirrored wall by the lockers. There were full-length panels mounted beside the sink vanities—each positioned to catch different angles, reflecting more than anyone probably thought about while half-dressed and rushing to get home. There were others, too. Above the benches. In the corners. And—
One in each shower cubicle.
That last part stopped her.
Her eyes drifted toward the tiled alcove where steam was already curling around the edges of the entryway. Each stall had its own mirror—tall, vertical, facing inward. She remembered using them absently before, checking for shampoo in her hair, sometimes using the reflection to towel off more efficiently.
But now...
Her gaze snapped back to the crack.
Light.
Then shadow.
Someone was there. Still there.
Her chest rose and fell more sharply now, a subtle rhythm of breath growing deeper beneath the pretense of calm.
Could they all be?
Every mirror?
Her mind raced. It seemed impossible. But then—why so many? Why in the showers? Why such deliberate placement?
Her pulse ticked at the base of her throat.
She gathered her towel and her caddy and walked slowly toward the showers, barefoot on cool tile, her bare body reflected in mirror after mirror as she passed.
When she stepped into the last cubicle, the one on the end, the mirror faced her directly. It looked like all the others—innocuous. Ordinary.
But now she wasn’t sure.
She pulled the curtain tight and turned on the water and almost instantly steam started swirling around the cubicle. She stepped under the water, the spray hot on her skin, her hair slicking back, lips parting.
Her eyes remained locked on the mirror across from her.
Not cracked.
No line of light.
No sign of movement.
And yet—she couldn’t shake the feeling.
Were all of them like this?
Was someone behind this one now?
Watching?
She didn’t move.
Didn’t speak.
Just stared into the steam-blurred reflection of her own naked body, heart pounding louder than the water.
Now what?

At 27, Emily Davenport is a new mother adjusting to life after childbirth—a fading marriage, a body still healing, and a routine that leaves her feeling invisible. And one by one, they make their move. Ripe for the Taking follows Emily’s slow-burn descent into temptation, where every choice—whether to resist or surrender—leads her deeper into the thrill of being wanted again. Mother. Wife. Woman.
