After dealing with the Plant 43, Claire finally makes it to the lab holding the administrator clearance. Yet, a never-resting evil keeps pursuing them...

Chapter 10 - **** And Rebirth

Claire chopped off the vines covering the gate and opened it with the senior staff clearance.

Behind the gate was the bioreactor chamber. It is a large area separated into two levels, while the upper level served as a bridge connecting the the greenhouse and the Level 4 testing lab, and the lower one stored numerous tanks of biofuels, a by-product of the Plant 43 research.

Claire rushed through the bridge and went inside the lab. The lights in the room were still on, but no one was in here, not even a vampire. It seemed like not many people bothered to read that e-mail when everything went wrong, huh.

Although, she did find a high-voltage stun gun, the Spark Shot, in one of the lockers. It belonged to one of the members of the animal testing team.

There was a secured storage tank at the end of the room. She wondered what’s inside but that wasn’t her priority now.

On one of the desks she found a family photo. In it, Sherry was in a beautiful white dress and smiling happily. Her father, William, in woollen sweater, was so serious and didn’t seem to be looking at the camera at all. Annette was standing behind them, holding her husband and lovely daughter together. They just...didn’t look like a family...

“Oh, Sherry...” Claire touched the photo and she could feel the hidden sadness in Sherry’s smile.

OK, time to get to business. Claire turned on Annette’s personal computer and tried to activate the highest clearance authorizing device in the NEST. However, a research note caught her eyes. Research on the true vampires? Driven by a strange curiosity, Claire clicked the file and read the note.

The vampire virus engineered by Umbrella was based on the blood of a true vampire. However, even as a high-level scientist as Annette, she didn’t know how the Corporation got the blood or whom they got it from. The characteristics of a ν strain vampire resembled mostly those of a true vampire, but they should be still considered different creatures.

“True vampires turn their victims by...draining them?” Claire finished the reading with astonishment. But that actually explains why I didn’t get infected when Leon bit me...He’s turned into a...true vampire?

But she didn’t have much time to think about that now. She quickly activate the device through the console and put the chip on it. With that, Claire overwrote her chip with the administrator clearance in just one minute. Now she could finally get everyone out of this place!

“Gotta get back to them...” Claire carefully installed the clearance chip and doubled back.

The moment she crossed the bridge, the ceiling of the bioreactor chamber broke and G2 dropped behind her. It had several new wounds all over its body, but its form was basically the same as when they encountered it in the sewer.

“Your ass again!?” Angry with its untimely intrusion, Claire pointed her grenade launcher at it and fired an acid round.

The strong acid started to melt its skin. It cried painful screams, but at the same time, its body began a further mutation. Its skin turned gray while it grew another huge claw on its left side. The human head on its chest has disappeared and the monster head became more sinister, with its eyes all turned red and a pair of fangs came down its jaw. It has become the third malformation of the G creature, aka G3.

“No...It was...” When Claire stared at G3’s eyes, she immediately felt the mind controlling power trying to pierce her brain.

What the hell? That was the mind control power...like the one of those vampires...Was it because Katherine bit it beneath the orphanage? It got cross-infected?

“Class A breach detected. Lab quarantined until target is neutralized.” The female synthetic voice echoed in the room.

The door behind her was immediately shut. There’s no time for her to complain now. Claire punched the button on the panel to lower the bridge, then jumped down on it. Her best strategy was to take advantage of the broad space on the lower level to maneuver and fight the monster with everything she had.

“This ends now...” She reloaded her grenade launcher and aimed at G3 again.

The fight didn’t go as well as she thought. Although G3 was slower than its previous malformation, Claire was not any better. She has been fed on too much by Leon and now the blood loss was taking a toll on her. She felt exhausted very quickly and her hands were shaking, which affected her aiming inevitably.

G3 took tons of damage in mere minutes. The eyes on its shoulder, its ankle and its back were destroyed by swarms of bullets, then regenerated, and then destroyed again. Its regenerating ability do have a limit, however, had the fight turned into a war of attrition, Claire feared that she was the first one out.

Need to think of something...Claire looked at her surroundings and got an idea when she saw the tanks of biofuels.

“Alright. Come on, you bastard!” Claire ran around the room to draw G3’s attention to the tanks.

In the next few minutes G3 have been throwing the tanks full of biofuels at the girl. However, Claire deliberately positioned those thanks in the middle of the room by standing around there every time G3 made a throw. When all the tanks, leaked or not, were assembled with G3 charging through them, Claire fired a flame round and made a huge explosion.

The overwhelming shock wave swept her to the wall and covered her in dust. She let out a scream of the pain from her back, but at least she’s still alive. Her plan was to deal a large amount of damage at once, which could surpass G3’s regenerating ability. The biofuels explosion did achieve the goal, but...

What she didn’t expect was the NEST has been sabotaged by the Plant 43 for days, and the structure below this room was basically hollow after its demise. The concentrated biofuels explosion blasted a large hole on the floor and G3, or the remains of it, dropped into the abyss.

“Target has been neutralized. Ending quarantine.” The female synthetic voice finally gave her some good news. For now.

“That went well...” Claire struggled to get up. She could barely hold herself together, but she needed to make it back to Sherry. She walked back to the door to the greenhouse and opened it with the clearance.

To her surprise, Leon was standing right outside door. He looked tired, but everything else was fine.

“Leon! You made it!” Claire stepped forward and hugged him happily.

“Yeah.” Leon smiled and wrapped his hands around her back, “I’m glad you’re OK, too.”

“I found the administrator clearance.” Claire showed her wristband with confidence, “Now we can take the central elevator and get-”

“Attention: Leak of a Level 4 virus detected.” The female synthetic voice suddenly sounded along with piercing alarm bells, “Facility lockdown initiated. Self-destruct sequence will begin when lockdown is complete.”

“What?” Claire was shocked.

“Come on!” Leon grabbed her hand and ran towards the exit immediately. His hand was cold, but there was actually a little warmth that she could feel through his palm.

But they were already too late. The East Area has been locked down and even the administrator clearance couldn’t get them past the door. Leon tried to crack the door by **** but he was not strong enough to do so.

“Damn it! It’s all my fault! I blew that thing down.” Claire was frustrated. She wandered around in the hallway, trying to figure out what to do next.

“Don’t say that.” Leon tried to comfort her by softly placing his hand on her shoulder, “You couldn’t have known.”

“But Sherry...and Dustin...” Claire wanted to cry, but it was at this moment that she seemed to have something in her mind, “Right! The device.”

She quickly ran back to the lab, leaving Leon behind. With Annette’s device she could grant the administrator clearance to Sherry’s wristband. Since the door of the North Area was crashed from the beginning, they could get to central elevator and leave this place. Just, not with her.

“Sherry? Dustin? Are you there?” Claire asked through the microphone.

“Claire! Are you alright?” Sherry was happy to see her voice. It was a pity that there wasn’t a camera in this lab.

“Yeah! I’m fine.” Claire tried her best to hold her tears back and remained calm.

“Claire, I’m glad you’re OK.” Dustin joined in, “Did Leon find you? What does that lockdown mean?”

“Listen, we don’t have much time. Sherry, I need you to put the clearance chip on the authorizing device.” Claire operated the device at the same time, “I will grant you the administrator clearance from here, so that you can get to the central elevator and leave.”

“But...what about you?” Sherry asked in a shaking tone. She already felt that something’s wrong.

“I...I can’t get out.” Claire smiled reluctantly.

“What? No!” Sherry burst into tears as she realized what that meant, “I’m not leaving without you! You promised you’ll be back! You promised!”

“I’m sorry...so, so sorry...” Claire covered her eyes to hold herself together, “Dustin, please take care of Sherry for me...”

“You owe me a great deal, Claire.” Dustin replied as calmly as he could, “Sherry...Come on. We gotta get going.”

“Claire...” Sherry sobbed between her words, “Thank you...for everything...”

“Goodbye, Sherry...” Claire turned off the microphone and finally collapsed on the floor. Despite fighting horrific monsters all night, she wasn’t ready for this. She couldn’t believe that she would die in a strange city alone. She was scared.

It was at this moment, Leon got back into the lab, sat by her and tried to wipe the tears on her cheek. Well, maybe not alone.

“Hey...” He said softly, “You look better when you smile.”

“Ha...” Claire **** a smile on her face as a respond, but sadness caught up with her quickly, “Sorry. I screwed up and now we both are gonna die in here.”

“I’m the one that should be sorry. I’m not strong enough.” Leon blankly stared forward and said, “I keep saying that I will get you out alive. And I failed.”

Claire remained silent and buried her face in her arms. To her, Leon was still that caring police officer that has saved her more than once from all kinds of dangers in this city. It didn’t matter whatever he has become, her feelings towards him was true.

“You know, if we met at another time, in another place...” He murmured with a little smirk on his face.

“No. We met last night in that gas station. That was when and where we should meet.” Claire lifted up her head and replied firmly, “I don’t want anytime or anywhere around. I love you, Leon, more than anything.”

Leon seemed to be shocked.

“But what about you?” Claire gazed into his eyes, “What do you think of me?”

“I love you, too, Claire.” Leon approached her face with a sincere smile.

She wasn’t ready but her lips have already been sealed by his. They shared a passionate kiss, holding each other’s head, and the sweetness of Claire’s saliva stimulated him drastically. He licked the cut wound on her tongue, which made her feel the pleasure of limp and numb.

“Am I?” Claire replied in a shaking but joyful tone, while softly touching the bite marks on her neck, “I think I just come back for more.”
