Penny barely suppressed a smile, which made Matt angrier. "Ok, so I've sort of tidied up my lifestyle a little bit. Haven't you noticed how much less clutter there is in our house? I've been much, much neater since taking it. I'm also reading a lot more! Now that a textbook is as thrilling as a **** mystery, I can finally study for the GRE."

"You've been studying?" Matt asked, shocked. "When?"

"Every night, you doofus!" Penny said. "You haven't noticed those stacks of GRE test prep books on my nightstand?"

Matt sighed. "I've been distracted by all of this shit... I've been so angry about everyone turning into zombies that I've been ignoring you. I'm sorry, Pen."

She smiled and gently put a hand on his knee. "You're forgiven, Matt. I mean it. I can't feel bad that you've ignored me but I can feel happy that you've gotten past it. Every time you lash out at me it hurts you."

"Well then who am I supposed to lash out at?" he spat. "Penny left me with half of her. The half that I can't even get mad at. Fuck."

To his surprise, Penny nodded. "I think you're right. You've convinced me that I'm really only half a person. A lot of your Penny died that day, but a lot more of her is still here, still me. I still love you, Matt, with however much of a heart I still have."

"In fact," she added after a moment's thought, "We got rid of any part of me that didn't."

She chuckled at the casually tossed-away line, but Matt had a strange look that Penny couldn't quite read. "I think I love more now, which means I love you more now. All those little faults and grievances I had? They just don't bother me any more."

"You still see them, though." Matt's voice was almost... curious?

She rolled her eyes. "Well, yeah. I'd have to be blind not to."

There was a long pause. Penny wasn't sure whether to say something or let Matt stew. Finally, he looked up at her.

"I want you to get the booster."

She stared at him in elated shock. "You do? Are you serious? Oh my God, that's amazing!"

He grinned. "So you want to get it?"

Penny nodded, tears in her eyes. "Oh my God, Matt, I'm so happy! I just- I never thought you'd go for it!" She wiped at her left eye, smearing the makeup slightly. "Can I ask why, though? It sounded like everything you hate about the anesthetic!"

He smiled cruelly and she noted absently that he was doing this out of spite. Looking into his angry, hateful face, she burst into laughter. "Oh, babe, you are so fucking resentful right now! What is going on with you? I- God, I've never been so happy! Why?"

"Because now that you've admitted you're not fully human, I wanna break you down. If Penny's soul is out there, somewhere - God knows it can't still be in whatever you are - I want her to see this. She discarded you like a chicken bone and I want her to smell you rotting."

Penny shrugged. "Sounds good to me!"
