You do an initial lap of the city, noting some useful things like extraction points, dead ends, and a nice bakery. You also see someone you know, the princess's prize student Twilight Sparkle, she has always had a bit of a crush on you and maybe you can exploit that to get her to help you with this Rainbow Dash you hear so much about.

You fly silently down to her and take up a position just behind her. Walking with her all the way into the library before she notices you. She starts and looks around in dismay "What... what are you doing here Star? Is there a battle about to start?" She looks like she is in genuine terror and you put your hoof on her shoulder "Twi, if there was a problem Spike would have given you the message not me, I am just on leave and I thought I would come to Ponyville to visit. Actually, now that I think about it there was something else, I heard there was a filly who lives here trying to claim my title, you know her?" Twilight calms instantly and smiles picking her books up and starts to talk, still a little winded "Rainbow? I don't think she is planning an attack on you. She is really fast though."

After a few minutes of idle chit chat she agrees to introduce you two tomorrow and offers to let you stay the night in her place, she looks a little flustered when she says it.
