It's not difficult to find the site of the accident, what with the fire engines and the plume of smoke and everything. The fire seems to be out now, and the firefighters are doing... whatever it is they do after the fire is out. Structural checks? Aftershocks? Seems to take a while, whatever it is.

There is a small crowd of gawpers being kept back by more police officers and yoi can see a couple of paramedics standing around too. That's always either a good sign (because nobody is hurt) or a bad sign (because nobody is alive enough to help). The officer stops you.

"Hey, the officer at the front said I can come in?" you say, and they wave you past the line of onlookers into the building without further question.

The High Energy Physics building was a redbrick block without much ornamentation or pretension. Even less so now it's lacking a roof or many of its windows. You can barely perceive a faint scratching or crackling sound coming from within the building. It seems to be coming from the basement, which is surely unsafe?
