What's next?

Pick a door, any door...

William continued on down the hallway, as there didn't appear to be any other way out of his lab at the moment. His lab was in the basement of the old house, but now the door leading to the stairs had been replaced by this very, very long hallway. In fact, William was trying to deduce just how long it was. The dim lightbulb at the far end didn't seem to be getting any closer, but as he looked back the light from his lab certainly was getting farther and farther away.

He briefly inspected the doors as he passed. They all looked identical, no distinguishing marks whatsoever. A bare lightbulb hung above each door, but not a single one was lit. Was this some kind of storage? Did they all lead somewhere? After a few minutes, William was increasingly annoyed that he seemed no closer to the end of the hallway. Seeing as there was nowhere else to go, he decided he might as well see what was behind one of the doors.

"Does it even matter which one?" He said to no one in particular. He stopped and turned to the nearest door on his right. He brought his hand up to the knob, as soon as he touched it, the light above the door flickered on. Its faint amber light filled the area around door, but not much else. William pulled his hand back in surprise, and a second later the light went out. He touched again, the light came on. He tried touching the knobs of a few other doors around him and the same thing happened - the light came on as he touched it, and went off when he let go.

"Hmmm," William returned to the first door he touched. "As good as any, I suppose," he said to himself as he turned the knob. The door swung open freely and easily. This time, the light stayed on when he let go. He looked inside, puzzled, trying to process exactly what he was seeing...
