...a long, dark hallway

William's lab was located in his home, a century old two-story house located on an acreage outside, far enough from any neighbours that they wouldn't ask questions about what he did there. Well, that's where it had been located before he stepped through the crack.

Before him was a long, dark, concrete hallway. Far down at the end he could see one dim lightbulb hanging, but between his lab at the bulb was utter darkness. Where had the crack taken him? Was this some sort of underground bunker? Had something happened?

Returning to his lab, William retrieved a flashlight that he kept around for the many times he blew a breaker during an experiment. Clicking it on, he began to explore. Ever few feet along the hallway was a door, no labels, no locks. Above him there were old burnt out bulbs hanging by wires, as if the place had been neglected for a long time.

William didn't know what was happening, where he was, but one thing he knew was that he didn't feel safe. He had to decide what to do. Should he go on to the end of the hallway? Should he try one of the doors? Should he return to his lab?

To William's mind, there was only one reasonable thing to do. He decided to...
