Although many states and territories in these united states had adopted progressive laws and attitudes on gay relationships and marriages, Errin and Katrien still endured targeted judgement and harassment from the locals in their own hometown, of all places. For their love, their choice, their styles and aesthetics...but mostly because a backwater society, (yes, even in the 1990s!) in northern New York could not comprehend that love knows no bounds. The two women tried to rise above and block out the disdain, but eventually it became all to exhausting. They began to make lists and weigh pros and cons about each state and city in the union. Errin recalled that she'd been to Georgia as a youngster on a family vacation and remembered the warm summers and vibrant fruit farms and all the walks of life she'd ever seen, which this detail alone was enough to reassure the couple that they'd fit in without standing out. They decided after a long embrace to take the plunge and start fresh in a new state. As a twenty-four-year-old grade school gym teacher, Katrien called a number from an educational magazine and set up a phone interview that same day with an inner-city school in New Atlanta, and came out swinging successfully. They were excited to have her and would even provide a spacious apartment within a few blocks of the campus to get the ball rolling. Katrien truly felt that things were looking up! Errin didn't have a specialty job; rather, she was a housekeeper and knew a job would be easy to come by on the fly. They giggled and laughed about the southern accent and the seemingly boundless opportunities of a city (still a relatively uncommon word in their daily vocabulary) and started packing up their life for the move!
