Chapter 24
by Orlog4
What spell do you prefer?
Illusions of yourself
Illusions may be simple and many people think they are just for entertainment. But they are wrong. Distraction and tricking can be powerful weapons. Novices like you can only create fake pictures and maybe basic noises. More educated mages can also fake scent and allow their illusions to speak like normal humans. Goren, the mage who recruited you was able to create a perfect illusion of a fairy. And the highest form of illusions can even think on their own. But you have only heard about this.
For the chimera, you hope your basic illusions will be enough. Because if not, this will probably be a very short fight. You begin by letting you mana flow. A circle of bright white light appears in your hand. You focus on the runes and create a connection to your mind. The illusion will look exactly like you imagine them and behave like you command them. Some of the results can become really funny, because most people look totally different than they think. Good thing is that your Professor trained you to know yourself.
Rune after Rune appear in the circle and when the spell is complete, you close your hand. Almost immediately three other versions of yourself appear out of nothing next to you. You are relived, that they all look convincing enough for your purpose. Even if you notice some minor differences. One has another hairstyle for example and another one has a pink mage robe instead of a white one. You have no idea what you were thinking when you created this one. Maybe you worried about tocar and his colors mixed with your imagination. The mind can be strange.
The chimera, already coming slowly towards you, suddenly backs off irritated. You assume that since it was created for war, terror and destruction, it never met a mind mage before and has no clue what is currently going on. But that makes it even better for you. You can use it's confusion. You let the three illusions circle around the chimera with their fake daggers drawn. You move too, so the monster has more trouble finding out which one is the real one. You even create two more copies, so it gets even more confused.
The first illusion attacks. The chimera immediately bites it and it vanishes into white smoke. You replace the illusion and let two more attack. This time the chimera has to back off and dance around to make sure it can't get hit in case one of them would be real. You kind of enjoy this. It feels good making this monster nervous and insecure. And you prepare to attack with the next group to really hit the beast.
Suddenly, the chimera stops. You get nervous because it seems to have an idea. it lifts its head and sniffes in the air. Then it looks straight to the real you and growls angry. The illusions have no scent at all and with its superior nose, the chimera can very precisely find out which are the copies. You sigh and with a fingersnap you end the spell. All remaining illusions of yourself vanish into white smoke. Well, this trick did not work out. The illusions will not work when the chimera uses it's brain. You at least got some time to think about your next spell. You still can try the mindblow to attack the chimera or use mindreading to see it's next steps and counter it's attacks.
Try another spell!
