Chapter 3 by 69Sage96 69Sage96

"Relax"? Or head to the city.

Head to the City.

You decided to head to the city.

“No thanks, I think I got this magic under control for now. No need to relax.” You said obliviously.

“Good luck then,” Lexi said with a small pout before disappearing in a small flash of light.

At the top left of your vision, you noticed a small golden flashing, like something was trying to get your attention. Looking up at it the quest menu appeared.

[Quest Objective]

Head to Marfont City.

Reward: Map information

After reading the quest information you waved the screen away, before opening up your map.

The map was mostly covered in a grey fog except for a small area around you. In the center of the map was a white arrow representing you. A bit north of you was a golden dot with the words "Quest Objective" above it. Orienting yourself, you set out towards the dot.

You found a small walking path that snaked along the edge of the creek to the west. Following the path for a while, you came across a road that would take you north towards the city. You were relatively close to Marfont so it wasn’t too surprising when you came across life. What did surprise you was the variety of races and creatures traveling down the road. During an hour of travel, you saw humans, elves, cat-folk, a bunny race, you even saw a winged draconic woman carrying a massive sword on her back.

You were also sharing the road with wagons pulled by strange creatures. The most common were giant lizards and an animal similar to horses but with large horns on their heads. Less commonly you saw some pulled by large cat or dog-looking beasts. You also spotted a couple of expensive-looking carriages that moved on their own, powered by what you could only assume was magic.

The walk got boring pretty quick though, the whole road was surrounded by farmland. Occasionally you passed inns and taverns built for the farmers but they were mostly empty. Eventually, you crested a large hill and got your first view of the city.

The city was massive. Surrounded by mighty walls that towered over the surrounding landscape. The walls were built from stone but had a blue glow to them. If you had to guess based on game and anime experience you would say the walls were strengthened with mana.

On top of the wall were giant blue spheres placed periodically. Maybe they were a power source? Or some sort of defensive measure? About a mile from the wall the farmland ended, allowing a clear view around the walls. To the east of the city was a wide river running near the wall. On the river were docks and small ships clearly used for trade.

You set out once again walking the last few miles towards the walls. By this point, there were many wagons and carriages alongside you.

As you neared the gate you noticed people around you presented large colored coins to the guards as they road past. Occasionally wagons would be stopped, as guards randomly inspected them.

As you approached a guard looked at you expectantly. Not having a coin to flash you just kept walking.

“Present identification.” The guard spoke as you tried to pass through the gates.

“I don’t have any.”

“Then speak with the Sergeant. You can't enter without one.” The guard said as he gestured to a man standing nearby.

You followed his instructions and walked over to a large serious-looking man.

“What is your business in Marfont?”

“I came to register as an adventurer.”

The man stared at you for a moment, then you felt a strong aura press down on you. It felt as though he was searching you.

“A lightning rune? Do you have any experience fighting?”

“I acquired my rune recently, so no.”

“I see. If you plan on staying in Marfont you should join the military for some experience.” He said as he pulled out a blue sphere and a grey coin a few inches in size.

“Place your hand on the ball. It’s just recording some basic information. ”

You did as you were told and felt the ball suck a bit of mana from your hand.

The man nodded and handed you the coin.

“This coin is to identify yourself as a guest in the city. Try not to find yourself in any trouble. The coin has a tracking device in it, and it's registered to you, so it will be pretty simple to hunt you down.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Just call me Marcus. You’re good to go.”

Saying your thanks you walk through the gate.

[Quest Objective Complete]

Head to Marfont City.

Reward: Map information.

[Quest Update]

Find Guildhall

Reward: 10 Silver coins

When you passed through the gate your quest instantly updated. Ignoring it you took your first look at Marfont.

The city was bustling with life. Alongside the road were small stalls with merchants selling all sorts of strange fruits and foods while people crowded around searching for what they needed. The taverns in the city were loaded with people unlike outside the city. Apparently, people started their nights early here. While the main road was busy, the area you were in seemed residential. Just off the main road were rows after rows of houses. The further from the main road, the worse they looked.

Following the road, for a while longer you eventually came across a small park. Tired of walking for so long you found a bench to rest on.

Since you just entered the city you decided to get your bearing, so you opened up your map.

Thanks to your quest reward, a lot of fog disappeared and information filled your screen. Zooming out you noticed you could now see the southwestern portion of the continent.

Currently, you were on a big peninsula shaped like a boot, which was controlled by the Kingdom of Maceria. The city of Marfont happened to be the capital of this Kingdom and was located at the tip of the peninsula.

Selecting Marfont gave you a local map of the city filled with all sorts of information.

Marfont was divided into multiple districts, most of which were residential. In the middle was a special district known labeled as the “King’s District.” However, you didn’t have much information on the layout inside, unfortunately, the information was restricted. You were not allowed map data unless you were granted permission to enter the district. Which was pretty much reserved for nobility and other important people.

After staring at the map for a while you discovered a search function and quickly found the guildhall. Unfortunately, the building was on the complete opposite side of the city from you.

Sighing you closed your map and continued your walk.

After what felt like hours, you finally found yourself standing before the guildhall. The guildhall was a grand building with giant domes. Entering through huge doors you found yourself in a massive room that reminded you of the Hagia Sophia back on Earth. Around you were giant black columns and archways all supporting a giant domed ceiling. Everywhere you looked were incredible paintings of magical battles between adventurers and monsters. Painted on the dome itself were 9 powerful-looking adventurers, all from different races. Their hands were stretched out towards the center of the dome, bolts of magic shooting from their hands into a giant golden sphere of energy that illuminated the room.

The scene was breathtaking and you stood staring, awed for a time, completely ignoring another quest update.

“You another tourist?”

Looking away from the ceiling you saw some rich young man sneering at you from behind.

“No, it’s just my first time here. I'm here to register as an adventurer.”

“So you decided to register at the original guildhall, huh? Did you think signing up here would make you important? Or do you think your so special a noble will recruit you? You peasants should just register at your shitty little villages instead of wasting everyone's time. Now stop blocking the entrance.” He said shoving past you.

Stumbling to the side you considered electrocuting the guy but decided that was probably a horrible idea. Instead, you walked towards a large circular desk labeled as registration.

That guy seemed to have a point though, the line was insanely long. It was going to take the rest of the day to register.

While you were in line you accepted your reward for coming to the guildhall. The tutorial gave you a final quest to register at the guildhall, all further quests would have to be found on your own. The final reward was called “Guardians Purse.” Hopefully, it was just a bunch of money.

“Are you here to register too?”

Looking up you saw a pretty-looking girl who appeared to be around 19. She was a little shorter than you with long blonde hair and big blue eyes, which stared right at you.

Not waiting for a response, she continued. “I traveled so far to register here. This guildhall was created by 9 different races that formed an alliance against the monsters. They built a peaceful kingdom for all races. As an elf, I just had to start my adventures here." She said while staring at the ceiling. While she did you stared at her pointed ears before speaking.

“I didn't know all that. I guess I'm pretty lucky to register here. I just happened to find a rune south of Marfont.”

“Really? You must have grown up secluded. The history of this place is very widespread. What rune did you find if you don't mind me asking?”

“Lightning.”

“A pretty common one, but still very powerful. You're fairly lucky. I somehow managed to form an extremely rare rune. Back home I used to sneak out and nap in the woods. Turns out a dreamed so much I formed a rune. Dream runes are almost unheard of. By the way, what's your name?"

Jason, and yours?”

“Layla.”

The two of you chatted for a while longer until eventually, it was Layla’s turn at the desk. At this point, it was turning dark outside and you were pretty much exhausted.

“I really should have found a place to stay before coming here... I hope 10 silvers is enough for a room."

A few minutes later Layla finished registering and with a wave headed off to the right.

“How can I help you?” Asked a woman as you approached the desk.

“I’d like to register as an adventurer.”

“Of course, please allow me to explain your position as an adventurer.”

After a long spiel about how you were meant to protect the helpless from monsters and be a role model, the woman handed you a blue orb a little larger than the one Marcus made you use.

“This will record your name, age, rune, skills, abilities, along with all of their rankings and stats. This information will be private unless you request it be made public.”

Taking the orb, you once again felt it suck some mana out through your hand. After a moment you handed the ball back.

“Your information has been added to the adventurers' database, now just sign this piece of paper and place your thumbprint here,” she said.

After you signed and added your thumbprint she handed you a green coin. “This coin identifies you as a registered adventurer throughout the kingdom of Maceria. You now have the right to take up residence in any town or city with a guildhall. If you have a different coin please hand it over.”

You handed her your guest coin and took your new adventurer coin.

“You now have 3 options. You can seek recruitment by the city of Marfont. Doing this will make your information public, but will allow you the chance to be recruited by the military, schools, research groups, rich families, or possibly even nobility. Another option is to seek a party. You can either request help from the guild, or you can mingle with other adventurers in the room to our right. Or finally, you can go solo. What would you like to do?”

Will you seek recruitment, join a party, or go solo?
