Exploration.

The team prepared and captain Bhanoa told Commander Jonas that she was going with them as they had a spare diving suit. Yes, Unison had its own emergency dive suits but they were not capable of shielding against radiation. So captain Bhanoa found herself in her quarters dusting herself down with talcum powder then stepping into the normal wetsuit. The next thing was the bulky and heavy anti rad suit which she sealed in front of her. Once dressed she headed to the dive hatch and found the rest of the team.

She asked the commander why the suit was so heavy and he replied that it was made up of fibres coated in lead to stop most radiation. Captain Bhanoa turned over command to Commander Grater who deep down was anxious that her lover was leaving the submarine. They all donned the breathing apparatus and Commander Jonas reminded the captain that she would send back the three sailors already in the cave. Then the last thing they put on were the helmets which resembled space helmets but not so bulky.

They all entered the diving trunk and the hatch was sealed followed by a thumbs up from the captain and the trunk began to flood. Once the pressure was normalised the hatch was opened and the team swam out heading to the cave each holding a small motorised sledge. The two petty officers also had with them a bigger sledge carrying equipment for testing the air and water in the cavern. They reached the cave and swam the hundred yards and came up just near the ledge that the sailors had occupied.

The sailors pulled the sledge onto the ledge and then the captain told them to go back to Unison and have some proper food and rest. The petty officers were setting up the portable generator and computer while commander Jonas swam a little nearer to U1226 with a handheld rad detector. The needle remained on zero but then started to rise as he got to within thirty feet. He backed away heading to the ledge and was handed what looked like a toy submarine and placed it in the water. One petty officer pushed a button and the little sub-headed towards the U1226 sending back images to the computer.

It also sent back a radiation count of 100 millisieverts and Captain Bhanoa asked what it meant. Commander Jonas explain that the mSv was low. However, it was at the limit of human yearly exposure but the suits would protect them along as they limited their time on the U1226. They all headed towards the Uboat and found some chains hanging down in the water which they used to climb onto the deck of the submarine. They looked around and surprisingly the hull was in good shape for a craft 80 years old.

They noted that all the hatches had been welded shut which was strange and as they headed to the conning tower they hoped that the hatch was not welded. Commander Jonas sent the petty officers over to the dock and told them to explore and see what they could find. Bhanoa and Jonas claimed the ladder to the conning tower and found that the hatch was not welded but had been chained shut. They both knew this was getting damn strange as they tugged at the chain expecting to hold firm. One link however had been sitting in a pool of saltwater that had dripped from the cave ceiling and had rusted to brittleness.

Commander Jonas noted that the wheel on the hatch was fused by rust but luckily for them was turned into the open position. This meant that whoever had chained the hatch closed had not bothered to lock the hatch or someone inside had been trying to get out. He pulled at the hatch but it did not budge due to the hinge's being rusted so he looked for some sort of leverage. Going onto the dock he found some heavy steel wrenches that should work and after great effort and two broken wrenches the hatch opened, Lucky they wore their helmets or the stench of dead air and decay would have overcome them.

Commander Jonas headed down the ladder into the depths of the Uboat and waited for Captain Bhaoa to join him. They then made their way forward entering the control room and were met with a sight of utter horror. The crew were still here onboard and at their stations. Of course, they were nothing more than mummified bodies but what was evident was they had been all been shot in the head. Commander Jonas headed further and Captain Bhanoa found the main electrical panel and tried a button.

Surprisingly the lights flickered and then came on so this meant the batteries had some charge in them. They were joined by the two petty officers who reported that they had found a few offices, canteen and barracks room. Commander Jonas ordered them to look around while he went and checked the room. Captain Bhanoa went with him and climbed down onto the dock and headed down a passageway and came to an office. Jonas pushed against the door and it creaked open and they were met by more bodies, However, these bodies differed in the fact they had not been shot.
