Chapter 79 by Little_Dragon Little_Dragon

What's next?

Dragons Everywhere

John pulled the doors open and was blinded. He quickly turned his back, and looking back inside the building, he was able to easily make out several dozen small newt sized creatures, mostly hiding or skittering around the edges of the room.

Alison clung to John’s arm and looked up at him concerned. “What’s wrong?”

John shook his head a little. “Nothing’s exactly wrong. I can see a lot more when my eyes are like this and I’ve mostly used them in dark places. It kinda gives me a headache seeing all the bright colours outside. I should be alright soon.”

John’s attention was caught by the sound of a squawk-like call, then something tore at him as it flew past into the building.

-27hp

John grunted as he felt the impact and watched as a cat-sized creature gracefully landed on the floor in front of him. The first thing John noticed was its tail, long and covered in tiny soft-looking feathers, which turned from white to grey before reaching the tip with two opposing blue and grey striped feather fins.

The creature’s wings were tipped with dark grey and reached up oddly from what looked to be backwards facing front legs, reminding John of pterosaurs.

The thing twisted and turned around until John saw something he recognised. The front of the face of this creature was bright pink and reminded John of a fleshy beak but the thing he took notice of were jagged needle-like teeth that jutted out at all angles.

John decided to cast Observe on the thing

Name: Fletch Tailed Ragged Tooth

Family: Dragon | Branch: Pigmy Wyvern
Size: 28cm shoulder height/87cm head-to-tail | Weight: 3kg | Sex: M
Level: 4

Creature Description:

These small dragons have evolved in a harsh environment and as such they are extremely aggressive in order to ward off potential predators. Alone, these creatures are very weak and pose no threat but they are usually extremely social creatures who have large close families of between a couple hundred up to a few thousand members.

Although aggressive they do know when they are outmatched and will not attack a greater dragon. This has led to some weaker dragons developing a way to mimic the roar of much larger and stronger dragons to scare them away.

It is advised to avoid conflict with these despite their weak appearance; where there is one, it is likely there are many.

One strange fact about this species is that despite being avian hunters, their eyesight is slightly worse than that of a typical human.

Personal Description:

This creature was pulled into the barrier with a handful of family members, only twenty-seven members of the total two-thousand six-hundred and forty-two.

Heard cries of its wyrmling after your encounter with it and has been circling in search of prey ever since.

John managed to skim through everything before seeing the thing rush towards him. Swatting the window away, John pulled his arm back and swung, raking his claws across its body as it leapt into the air towards him.

The small dragon didn’t manage to get a hit on John but it did fly over his shoulder and outside. John spun around where he was assaulted again by the vividness of the world, but he **** himself to continue looking out. His headache subsided after a moment but the eye strain continued.

The pterosaur-like creature flew up and circled before more joined it. John felt slightly panicked. It had flown out of his range so quickly, he didn’t get the chance to see how much twenty-five took from its HP bar, and the addition of more of the things just made it harder to keep track. These things could move fast in the air, and if multiple came at him at the same time, he might not even manage to hit them. But he couldn’t just hide in the building, they had to find the owner to get out of the barrier before it collapsed.

John quickly brought the Observe back up to skim it again. “Oh! Alison, you might want to cover your ears, I’m going to make some noise,” he warned her.

It was then that he’d noticed a window in front of her, and recognised it as the dragon’s Observe sheet. Not having time for questioning things like that right now and seeing Alison pressing her hands to the sides of her head, John looked out to see three of the Ragged Tooth wyverns getting ready to dive.

John inhaled and watched as 20MP drained from his mana bar before he let out a deep, guttural gorilla-like roar which caused everything close to him to vibrate. All of the Ragged Tooth wyverns scattered, flying away as fast as their wings could take them.

John noticed the hundreds of wall clinging lizards also skittered away, clearing the streets until he and Alison were the only living things in sight. Even looking back into the building, he noticed that the salamander-like lizards in the room had either vanished or were scrambling to find shelter.

John turned to see Alison had gone from standing to almost balled up with her hands tightly pressed against her ears. He quickly closed the distance between them and knelt next to her placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Hey, are you alright? Sorry if that was sudden and loud. I needed to do something quick and their sheet said they weren’t a fan of loud noises. Lucky for me I have a dragon spell that lets me do a dragon roar… though if I’m honest that was much louder than last time and seemed like it carried more power. I’m not sure if it’s because I have dragon claws now or if it was due to the update…” John explained in a soft voice.

John helped Alison back onto the bench and quickly took a look into his abilities list. First, he opened up the description of Draconic Incantation.

Draconic Incantation

Passive
Description:
This skill allows you to innately know and learn draconic magic. The only way to learn such magic is from another dragon, though dragons value their magic over even the most precious treasure and are often unwilling to share their knowledge with their most trusted friends.
Like true names, Draconic Incantations carry the power of the spell’s true meaning, making draconic magic much more primal in nature.

John let out a quizzical, “Huh,” as he read the description for the first time. Alison was still a little shaken from John’s loud outburst, but despite that, she seemed curious. John was about to swipe the window away when Alison reached over and pulled it in front of herself to look at.

“Uh, how’d you do that?” John asked, raising his eyebrow and looking at Alison.

“Oh, uhm… W-well, I wa-wanted to lo-look at the t-thing you h-had earlier a-ab-about t-the fl-f-fletch t-tailed rag-ged t-tooth and a t-thing p-p-popped up t-telling m-me to f-f-fo-focus on it and it j-just came t-to me and w-when I r-reached for it I c-could move it a-a-around with m-my hands… so I j-just t-thought since y-y-you looked l-like you were f-fi-f-finished it w-would b-be okay for me to t-ta-take a look,” Alison stammered.

John let out a reassuring chuckle. “Oh, by all means, I just wondered how you did it, was all. Feel free to take a look and if there’s anything you’d like me to show you, just say the word.”

Alison blushed and a crooked smile formed on her face as she gently nodded. “Th-th-thanks.”

Alison turned her attention to the window she had in front of her while John brought up the description of Dragon’s Breath.

Dragon’s Breath

Active
Cost: 20 MP
Cast Time: Instantaneous
Element: Neutral
Description:

A booming roar emanates from the caster and can be heard up to a few kilometres away depending on the environment. A wave of **** pushes against anything three metres in the direction of the casting, possibly pushing it back.
The roar is often enough to cause a spike of fear and panic in creatures half your level. This doesn’t guarantee they will flee but most intelligent creatures would prefer to live another day.

“Okay, so yeah, the description has changed a little, it doesn’t mention Aspect Attunement at all though… its name changed a little too but it’s still dragon’s breath, so maybe when I use Aspect Attunement it will be specific for the element I have active?” John theorised. “Hmm, maybe I should check Aspect Attunement as well while I’m at it. Would you like to take a look at this spell too, Alison?”

Alison looked over and nodded, giving John a half-smile. John pushed the window towards her and she happily took hold of it and pulled it in front of her. She began to comb over the spell and John brought up the next window.

Aspect Attunement

Active
Level: 1
Duration: 10 minutes
Cast Cooldown: 25 minutes

Description:
For a limited time, you can channel an element you obtained by the consumption of Crystalised Dragon Blood.
The element you have attuned to will affect both your draconic mutations as well as certain skills or spells you know.

Elements Consumed:

Vox

John sighed at the alteration of the spell before reaching out and tapping Vox while casting Observe.

Vox

Element
Description:

Vox is the element of arcane magic. Vox is unique in that it is in a small capacity alive.

“Well, it’s nice to get an actual description; I didn’t know some of those things but I knew it was the element of magic,” John muttered absentmindedly.

John turned to look at Alison but jumped, finally noticing her head pressed against his shoulder. She quickly backed off. “S-sorry, I-I j-just wanted t-to look a-a-at w-w-what you w-w-were reading,” she defended herself.

“No, no. It’s fine, I don’t mind,” he laughed, “I just zoned out reading and didn’t expect you there. I don’t think there’s anything you could do that would upset me, so don’t worry.”

John dismissed the window and stood, stretching his back. “Alright, I think we need to get going.”

Alison’s face had reddened but she nodded and extended her hand, which John happily took hold of before helping her to her feet. Rather than letting her go, he interlaced his fingers with hers and guided her towards the door, stepping out into the street.

John’s migraine didn’t return but the eyestrain did, much stronger this time forcing him to half squint. The two walked down the now empty streets, and as they did John took note of a small group of deep blue, almost purple, winged creatures on top of one of the buildings. Bony spines protruded through their skin from head to tail. Their skulls were all exposed and glowing green eyes peered down at him.

The exposed bones made for an eerie appearance, like something you’d put up for Halloween, and it didn’t look like they had teeth at all, just a sharpened beak-like skull. One other thing John noticed was that they walked on the elbows of their wings where small hands sat and they didn’t seem to have any other kind of legs.

John decided to cast Observe on one just to be prepared. The only really interesting thing about them was that their name was Bone Stalker and that their wingspan was 124cm.

“Seems those things aren’t a threat, they’re interesting though.” John nodded towards the rooftop.

Alison looked up and watched as they walked. Their attention was snatched as a loud animal screech echoed through the medieval cityscape followed by what sounded like an explosion coming from somewhere straight ahead of them.

The two looked at each other before silently agreeing to veer off right, taking a diagonal road in a different direction.

They walked for ten or twenty minutes; by this time there were more dragons clinging to the walls, and a few more of the Bone Stalker dragons seemed to be gliding through the air. As John was looking around, Alison grabbed on his arm, gently tugging. He looked down at her and saw she was looking off to the side.

Following her eye line, he spotted the head of a deer-like creature. Its fur was cream but from the tip of its muzzle, two green lines ran up over its eyes and ears. The creature slowly moved out into view a little more and the green extended all over its body in wavy lines. Then its extremely long tail became visible; the thing flowed like fabric in the wind and looked almost like something you’d expect to see on a fish or eel rather than a deer.

It continued to walk out and move towards the two. Alison was clinging to John but seemed like she wasn’t going to move, while John was ready to push her out of harm’s way and defend her.

It stopped two metres away from the couple and placed one leg in front of the other before bowing its head. Curious, John cast Observe on the thing.

Name: Ribbon Tail

Family: Dragon | Branch: Lesser Basilisk
Size: 116cm shoulder height/513cm head-to-tail | Weight: 47kg | Sex: F
Level: 7

Creature Description:

Often seen as the herbivorous protector of the forest, these dragons are said to bring good luck to those who respect nature and bad luck to those who don’t.

They use their ribbon-like tail as a distraction for predators, almost hypnotising them, giving the Ribbon Tail the chance to escape easily.

Ribbon Tails are often found on the edges of urban environments and have become accustomed to intelligent races feeding and petting them.

Personal Description:

Hopes you have food

“Oh, sorry, little buddy, I don’t have any food with me right now,” John sighed.

Alison suddenly began rummaging through her bag before pulling out a granola bar and unwrapping it.

She looked up to John as if asking for approval to which he gave her a warm smile and a gentle nudge with his shoulder.

Alison stepped forwards, broke off a piece of the bar and placed it in her hand, holding it flat as if feeding a horse. The Ribbon Tail lifted its head to sniff at the bar before gently eating it from Alison’s hand and bowing its head again slightly.

Not needing any more of an invitation, Alison gently stroked the head and lime green mane before looking back at John and holding out the bar for him.

He let out a soft chuckle and joined her, mimicking what she’d done before. As the creature sniffed at him though, its ears shot up a little and it seemed to be more cautious, still the creature gently took the food and allowed John to pet it too. John was surprised at the softness of its mane.

Suddenly the Ribbon Tail’s head shot up looking around and then darted off quicker than John could react.

The sound of metal scraping on stone rang out. “Mister dragon! Come out, come out, wherever you are! I need a little help testing out my blades, HAHAHAHA!”
